Given that Montecito has a really lovely year round climate, the heating and cooling costs probably are less than you'd think. However, take a look at those huge and lovely emerald green lawns and then remember that here in SoCal we have almost no rain for months of the year. Big green lawns just aren't natural here, and to keep them green we either have to import water from other areas or pump it from natural aquafiers. So much for sustainability.

I might add that Montecito is ever-so-exclusive, so he won't be rubbing shoulders with any commoners aside from those who maintain his house. The whole Santa Barbara area has been stringently anti-growth for decades, to the point that there is almost no housing there for much less than $1,000,000, even old '50s tract homes in very ordinary parts of SB. This has lead to a situation where most ordinary people who work in SB and want to own a house either buy in Santa Maria 50 miles north, or Ventura 25 miles south, and then commute in on the 101. Santa Barbara doesn't like that either, and has for years refused to allow the 101 to be widened within the area, as it will "attact too much traffic". I've passed through here many times on a Sunday afternoon, and it can easily take an hour to go the 20 miles from Goleta to Summerland because the inadequate road is so jammed.

He is going to need a lot of "those border people" to help take care of all that.

The fact that man-made climate change is now beyond reasonable dispute.
It's just no good throwing in red-herrings here, we've upset Mother Nature, always red of tooth and claw and she's decided to spank us for it.
Let's hope she leaves it at a spanking.

Oh, and regarding his house(s). You know, when I'm in Germany, I don't drive, I use public transport.
In the 'States, I drive a big, gas guzzling pick-up, a rather large old Chevy and, because my darlin' was terrified I'd kill myself (I am not a good driver), until I got my feet under me, the largest Cadillac made after 1985.

Doesn't mean I don't believe in climate change or that it's our fault. Just means I use the resources available to me.

This anti-intellectual, anti-science mentality is not making America competitive against other countries in the capitalist world market we all live in.

It's been noted that as good as no jobs have been created in the US through all the "green" and "alternative" energy technologies introduced since Obama came into office.
Why?
Simple-the Chinese and the Europeans are so far advanced and the Americans so far behind, that it will take years for the US to catch up on infra-structure to even Denmark.

We are ahead of our goal in Germany to be totally Russian-gas independent in a few years and way ahead of our goal to cut our CO² output and our foreign-oil dependence.

Meanwhile, in the US, we are still giving our sworn enemies in the Islamic world billions of dollars DAILY for oil. What part of that makes sense to people who want to protect the US? Why is that "conservative"? How is it patriotic to give people who hate us money and increase our dependence on their good will when they have none towards us?

75% of every dollar of gas pumped at the station goes to the government in taxes. The government makes a SERIOUS killing, more so than the oil companies or anyone else involved in the industry, combined. It's a non-partisan issue since government is the problem as a whole, but the Dems love to hide behind a bunch of lies and propaganda.

Wake up people!! They're just playing us against each other while they secretly carry out their own agenda!

As someone who says he takes science seriously, you really ought to look at the link. I have several more, should this not clarify.
Now, I don't know where you come up with %75 is taxes, any verifiable sources?
Let's pretend, for a moment, tho', that this be so.

That means that for every dollar you pump, 0.25 goes to people who hate gays, hate Christians, hate democracy, hate the US Constitution, hate Israel, hate Jews....

Please. Ever since the Bill Clinton impeachment, there has been nothing but every growing distrust and downright loathing between your side of the house and my side. Let's not let our mutual dislike for each other's politics and religious beliefs (I am pro-civil rights and human status for gays and transgender) interfere with the facts as we know them.

 
May man made climate change sweep Al Gore and his new house out to sea... Meanwhile, I plan on enjoying probably a second year of a below-average-temp summer thanks to Redoubt, Iceland and several other volcanoes that decided to erupt recently.

That's a good plan. I will be in Atlanta at least four times in the next months, so any break in temps is fine with me.

Er, um, the volcano argument does support the man-made climate changes...

This winter was so cold that I was going to set him on fire to keep warm!

BTW him accepting the Nobel Prize in person caused global warming..the motorcade to and from the airport, the flight itself and the horde of media covering the event!!

That's the point (and the inconvenient truth)... Man has nothing to do with it. It is the natural cycle of heating and cooling. Not to mention the melting of ice on other planets and the sun in a heating cycle. It is natural, so relax and leave our energy alone, unless it will be supplied by oil that we drill, see and use domestically to lower energy costs.
 
I wonder what Al Gore has to say about the volcano that is spewing more carbon and and other pollutants than all the people of earth combined. I wonder how he's going to campaign against mother nature?
 
Al Gore---Don't get me started on that bozo!!!And something new about volcanoes---they can spew out more CFC's than man ever has-the CFC levels go up after volcanic activities.They CAN be produced in nature!So far global warming is based on "JUNK SCIENCE"!There is LESS carbon in the air now than was 100years ago!And yes we are going thru a 10,050 year warming cycle--ENJOY it there is nothing you can do about it-won't happen again for another 10,000years!And yes the climate is cooling off again.Some years ago I was linked to a "pollution map"guess who was to blame?Africa and South America.they generated the most.Open wood burning and rain forest burning.Wish I could find that map again.
 
my question is....since the global warming hysteria started, how many people spent their hard earned money replacing their cars, appliances, etc. And it is all because they were taken in by the hipe about the danger to mankind.

That is what bothers me about "global warming"its a SCAM!!!For the appliances-sorry FL fans--note how the FL washers are MUCH more expensive than the TL models.And the TL ones are being "phased out"You are being SCAMMED into buying something more expensive.The global warming is just that HYPE!!I have noticed that the winter in general has bin colder and wetter.And is this replacing of appliances better?esp if the old ones end up in a LANDFILL and were perefectly usable?

of otherwise perfectly sane, intelligent people in the US have serious problems accepting evidence which counters their "knowledge" when it comes to the natural sciences.

If it were only and exclusively creationism or ID or global warming or mineral oil is no problem for the ocean or the earth is only 5,000 (or is it 6,000) years old...homosexuality is not natural, etc. then it wouldn't pose a threat (except to those of us who are gay, of course...and everybody else who is not the way the Führer wanted).

That is not, however, the case. You folks seriously need to get out and about in the rest of the world more. It's been commented on here by many members apart from myself that traveling to Europe or Asia blows their minds when they compare the infra-structures in our countries to the US.

Or, to put it another way. The technical university I am fortunate to lecture for has a pretty consistent level of about 5-7% American students.
College education has become so expensive in the US that many families with ties to Europe send their kids over here. Great schools and - even counting travel, room and board, still 1/4 or less the cost in the US.

That's important. Far more so: Of those students who study here, the overwhelming majority remain. They are hired by technical and scientific and engineering firms who are very glad indeed of their expertise.

America began suffering a serious brain drain under the Bush#43 administration in the various fields of biology (the genetics/ stem-cell nonsense, ID, etc.). What began as a minor drip has now become a small, but continuous trickle.

The only other cultures in the world going backwards or standing still in the natural sciences are the fundamentalist Islamic ones.

By all means, vote Republican. By all means, continue to practice your "God said it, the Bible wrote it, I believe it" version of Christianity.

But at the very least, as patriotic Americans, you have a duty to at least consider the evidence of those of us you think are your enemies.

Or, to put it another way: We are creating jobs and making money hand over fist both on the money we save from not paying the people who hate us for oil and in selling green technology and infrastructure to technically backward countries.

Anybody taken a look recently at where the basic technology and parts come for all those windmills?
 
I haven't seen too many windmills in my area-even though they would work off the NC coast.Problem with them is--no one wants to see them,there are complaints they present a hazard to bird migration.And I deal with electric generation and distribution-Man likes electric sources HE can control-wind and solar he can't control them.solar especially is still too inefficient to use on a large scale basis-it is good for small applications:such as remotely located cell phone towers or communications that are too far away from commercial power.And solar panels are good at charging and keeping batteries charged.Wind is a good supplemental source of power.But don't count on it replacing mainline sources of power generation-such as coal,nuclear,and hydroelectric.All of these can be thought of as "prime movers"energy sources that can be used to be converted to electric energy.I have been about and have found that "green" sources of power are not suitable or cost effective means at this time.The efficiency of mainline sources is too great-fossil fueled boilers for power generation are the most efficient becuase of their high temperatures and reheat.Nuclear boilers run at lower temps-but higher volumes of steam and no reheat.At power plants-a fossil turbine system has three sections-High pressure,intermediate pressure(reheat) and low pressure-crossover pipe from the intermediate turbine to the low pressure ones.A nuclear turbine has two sections High pressure,then crossover pipe to the low pressure turbines.then the steam(too low a pressure to run turbines) at this point goes to the condensors(cooling towers)then to the feedwater pumps(usually turbines or electric-or even both)back into the boilers.Hydroelectric can be considered a renewable soruce of power-it uses gravity via falling water flowing thru a water turbine in a dam to rotate generators to produce electric power.Maybe we need more hyrdoelectric power?but to use it we need dams.And consider the hazard of the stored water if the dam breaks or leaks.
Where are the companies that build the windmills-I thought most of them WERE NOT in the US.I would like to read and see more about them.
