In 1969 Consumer Reports test wringer washers for safety. In 1962 responding to pressure for better protection from wringer induced accidents, Philco redesigned the wringer release but the end of the wringer flew outward when released under pressure and it could wonk unsuspecting passerbys causing injury. By 1969 5 machines passed the test. Whirlpool was top rated and simply pulling back, up down or sideways agaisnt the pull of the wringer caused it to release. One model of Speed Queen stops the action of the roll when something pulls back on the roll. This feature cost an additional $25.00. The remainging Speed Queen, Philco and Blackstone had end flinging wringers that might hiot a small child in the head. Maytag had is safety foot switch but the salesmen who sold the sample to CR advised them it was a nusance and to put it under on of the feet. Further, the Maytag releases some pressure when you hit the release but you still have to lift and click the top bar to hold it open. All in All Consumer Reports doesn't like reused wtaer of wringers regardless of their relative safety. [this post was last edited: 6/14/2010-21:59]
