danemodsandy wants. The chrome trim strip atop door edges differs slightly. I LOVE those Handles. Amana knew how to do that very well.
 
Yeah, the seller's on the good stuff if he thinks he's getting $600 for that.  Are gas fridges fairly uncommon?  I don't see too many of them listed.
 
50s/60s Servels

always seem to pull fat money when they're good ones. I didn't even know Amana made those things in the 70s. We had a 1950-something servel up in our mountain cabin. It was sooo remote, that propane was a must. Those things were quite a big deal in the 50s...and a lot of 'em seem to run forever and ever. They're REALLY quiet.
 
And yet, many people don't want anything to do with vintage appliances.  It confounds me.  They're so well made compared to today's stuff.

That it is.

There was one particular episode that put me off it for good. Was sort of the time of everything IKEA being "the thing" . Ikea were heavily pushing those spun aluminium tubular door and drawer pulls...you know...the long / wide rods. Full length. Anyway, this one particular episode was a kitchen "makeover". Every. Single. Door. Drawer/flat surface had one of those attached to it. I cannot deal with a room being a total shrine to a single design element. All I could think was "If you need that many grab bars, you are quite possibly too old or to inept to be trusted with a hot stove and gas". It was just OVER done. Badly. Have not seen HGTV in at least 6 years now.
 
That sounds about right.  What offends me is when they rip out a perfect vintage bathroom or kitchen because *gasp* it looks so dated!  There's plenty that can be done with a space to freshen it up without sacrificing the original design elements of the space.  That, and if one is offended by a mid century bathroom, why buy a mid century home?!

move into a planned community with retail malls adjacent. There is ENDLESS amounts of housing there for you to try your Design on a Dime theories and scrap booking rooms... Don't mess about with good period styles. They're special.
 
We have a very expensive neighborhood of McMansions down the road from here and it's like driving past 50 shades of beige.  AND the siding is already buckling.  The new construction around here has been rushed so badly; I would never buy one of those houses.  Plus they have a $350/month HOA fee.

all over this country apparently. It's a relatively recent thing, too. Since about early 90s. Gotten quite outta hand. So much money to buy a place that needs loads of maintenance in the first 3-5 months of residency.
 
$595 for a LP fridge???Guess that seller has been huffing too much propane!If you live in that housing district--"Beige Buckle side Estates"-What services do you get with that $350 HOA fee--RIPOFF-And they tell YOU how to live-makes me want that farmhouse-yes vintage-in the country out here in the middle of nowhere.
 
Sorry this isn't about gas fridges-but the Ryan homes when I lived in the DCarea-there were lots of complaints about their quality-and I thought Levitt homes were bad!Instead of Bulle Rock-rename the place as I said--"Beige Buckle siding Estates!"Don't think that place is for me-sounds like a "patio" home community-planned,very small lots-little privacy-and high prices for stuff you could do yourself.A freind of mine out here lives in a simialr place.He wants to move-but can't sell his house.No one wants to buy it.He is getting tired of the high HOA fees and the home payments.And these are also called "Retirement" communities-fine if the person on fixed income can afford it.
Guess back to the fridge-Still think the sellers price is too high and he needs to stop huffing propane.

What about the mixers and bread slicers? Are they run from a bicycle-like power take off device? Honestly, I have never thought about that.
 
Amana GAS Refrigerator?

This is not a Gas Refrigerator, Amana NEVER made a gas ref, as several mentioned this guy is smoking some wild stuff if he thinks this runs on propane. His price would be good if it does.

The only modern frost-free gas refs ever made were made and sold by WP in the early 1960s [ remember the pair on the Beverly Hillbillies ? ] WP even had models with Ice Magic automatic IMs.

Gas powered refrigeration lost out due to its lack of cooling power under warm weather conditions, also its high cost of operation, excessive heat in the kitchen, and the refrigeration system took up too much space which took away too much interior space.

We recently got a pre-war restored Servel from a friend in Cleveland Oh. Jason and I fired it up and actually got it cooling, it smells awful but thankfully I am keeping it OUTSIDE the house, I may install it in my All Gas Kitchen that I am building on the screened porch.

First picture shows door emblem. 2nd picture shows a carbon monoxide meter on top of the ref, we were getting reading of more that 999 parts per million the maximum reading for this CM detector. I am sure I need to make some adjustments to the burner, but the flame looks good.

LP GAS, $595, smoking crack - no, inhaling freon frequently and has the resulting classic Schizophrenia - call him and he'll say you're going to be his Vice President of the USA, he's going to win the election.

Unless - there is a conversion to LP for this refrigerator? Never mind, I think I just inhaled to much CO.

Hmm.

A conversion might not be out of the question. There is a company catering to the Amish market called Crystal Cold, which specializes in electric fridges converted to propane. I think they're using Frigidaires as the basis of their product line.

Not arguing with John combo52 about factory gas Amanas, but there's never any telling what the aftermarket will get up to....

Thank you Combo52. Was racking my fingers trying to search for an Amana "gas" refrigerator on the Internet and kept drawing blanks.

Thought perhaps since WP purchased Servel they slapped the "Amana" brand onto a line of such fridges, but Whirlpool only got that brand recently when they acquired Maytag.
 
Cristal Cold Gas Refs

Thanks Sandy for finding that site it gave me my appliance laugh for the day. I would love to see CRs tests of one of these refs, with no fans, no lights, no ice-maker and no Frost Free defrosting I can only imagine how poorly they would perform in side by side tests. And just look at the cost of operation based on their own gas consumption estimates, over a dollar to a dollar and a half per day based on propane @ $3 a gallon.

The only saving grace is that few people that will buy one of these refs will have air conditioning so they won't have to pay the cost of removing all the heat these refs produce from the house. However the only way these refs would probably work well in really hot weather would be if they were in a very well air conditioned house.

Crystal Cold has a less-than-stellar reputation, I understand, due to the very factors you mention. I'm sure that basing it on an electric fridge doesn't help.

My understanding about current gas fridges is that they work best in the smaller sizes, and are still marginal performers. I remember a Servel we had when I was very small. It wasn't that I was a budding appliance-head, it was that my mother absolutely hated the thing and said so, long, loud and often. That impressed itself on my memory. In later years I asked her about it, and she said, "It wouldn't keep stuff really cold, and forget about making ice."

P.S.: I'm wondering if you have some cosmetic parts for a GE J 757 range I recently acquired? My biggest need is for control panel glass.
