Amana radar range

Just got this tonight. I have seen it sitting out in front of this house for a while now. But never had a place for a microwave as the stove I have been using is a microwave oven combo. But now that I have this GE I’m going to be putting in. (Posted in another thread). I had to find a microwave. So this one entered my mind. I walked up and knocked on the door and the guy said that I was welcome to take it and that it even worked! I brought it home got it cleaned up and plugged it in with a cup of cold water in it. It runs quieter than any modern microwave I’ve ever heard and heats nicely. I’m very excited about this. I’m going to build some cabinets above the location of the stove. This will go nicely with the GE stove with all its chrome trim. I have been wanting an old microwave like this for quite a while. Unfortunately I need some goo gone to remove some tape residue from the front glass as someone had stuck a note on it at one time. Unfortunately there is a couple small cracks at the bottom of the glass and some dirt or some kind of substance between the two glasses. But other than that I cannot really complain. I mean the price was right! Not to mention I have looked on eBay and Wow!!! These things go for a lot of money. I seen one on there in the asking price was $600! It was just like mine although it was in better condition. Does anyone have any ideas how old this might be?

Jason, what a great score!

Alot of us up here have Amana Radaranges....most prefer the earlier chrome ones like you have (I *think* yours dates to post 1972 to circa 1978 or 79....maybe very early 80s). Someone up here will be able to tell you exactly as they're super familiar with each and every model (you can find model number and sometimes date on the back of machine on a paper label). I've got a 1982/3 touchmatic version and wouldn't trade it for modern stuff EVER. These were highly expensive new for good reason. They generally seem to run forever. Also, that glass tray inside yours--THOSE pull decent money on their own....they're original to these machines and got broken over the decades. Take care of that bit!

There was/is a guy up here called Corey or Cory? He is heavily into the Radarange and might just chime in for you.

Date might be...

more in line with 1975-76. Meant to put that in earlier reply. I was about 10 then, and a neighbour of ours bought that same model new....I think it's an RR-7?

OK thanks. Yeah I wasn’t really sure what year it was made but I knew it was old. I can’t believe the quality in this microwave. It’s so heavy I was baffled when I went to pick it up for the first time. I cannot wait to get it installed along with my new stove. I will have to post pictures here whenever it’s all done. Hopefully by Sunday.

Unfortunately this microwave is missing two of the rubber pads underneath. I’ve kind of looked a little on eBay for replacement pads but didn’t find any that said it went to this type of microwave. I’m sure I can make do with any kind of pad but was hoping I could find the right ones. I actually have a couple of the casserole dishes that came with these microwaves. I have picked them up in thrift stores in the past.

You said it. Quality. All that stainless lined interior...and assembled like a war tank! Good, good stuff. Yeah, the weight is tremendous on those--about threw out my back when I had to move this thing to the moving truck a few months ago! Gotta be around 60-70lb easy. Haven't looked underneath mine in awhile, but the rubber feet may be common replacements done with a donor blender or stand mixer. I will look around and see if I still have a spare pair--I remember taking those things off my Amana a few years ago for extra clearance between the cabinet and the top of the machine.

very nice...I have one just like it in my collection made in 1980 If you think these are heavy,pick up a ~late '60s one with twin bobbin transformer and electromagnet magnetron field..A lot of people are spooked by these RRs -thinking they spew radiation....

LOL I guess I hadn’t thought about that. But I’m not too worried. It is very cool and I’m very excited to have it. The only appliance I have left to get rid of now and replace with older is my refrigerator. It’s a new fancy side-by-side Samsung. With all touch controls. But I got it for $150 and it was new at the time. It just had a minor problem which made the refrigerator side not work well. I fixed it and have been using it for going on seven years now with no issues. But I have an old maytag side-by-side to replace it when its day comes. Then my home will be freed of modern appliances of any kind.

Jason you fit right in

with this crowd. Old school all the way. Most of it is repairable vs. the computerised crap being sold to everybody. For the price of a new replacement Samsung control board, you can get several vintage goodies that may well outlive YOU.

LOL that’s right. Anytime I need something I look for a vintage. If it’s something I need right away then I buy it off of eBay. I was really glad to find this group. There for a while I figured I was the only person who was interested in vintage appliances. I found this place by looking up images on Google. Almost all the images said they were from automaticWasher‘s.org. So eventually I clicked on the link and it brought me to this site where I started reading older posts. Eventually I went ahead and made an account. And I have loved it ever since. I can talk about appliances all I want on here and never be looked at strange.

New to you Amana microwave oven

Congratulations Jason on your new microwave there’s a date right on the back of all microwave ovens or on the model tag Federal law requires them to be dated as to when they’ll made

I may have some of the footpads for those Amana microwaves if you can’t find anything that works there really nothing special.

Feet for radar

Love my radar as i only use my newer over the range microwave to heat water - everything else is cooked or reheated in the radar. -cant beat the even heating of a radarange. Also found that quarters work for the rubber feet!
