Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

It definitely looks like my belt-eating '97 model with a few trim changes on the control panel, but I don't know if they were still being made by Raytheon. It's the Raytheon Amanas that have the well-deserved bad rep.

Hey Mike

What is the difference between our Speed Queens and the Amana machines? It looks like these Amana's had a plastic outer tub.
Do the Speed Queens have different motors and tub seals? And one thing I wish SQ would have done was label the "fabric selector switch" a wash/spin speed switch like the Amanas.

Impressive brochure, thanks for posting

I bought a set of these from Montgomery Wards, when they were going out of business in 2000, to replace a 'dancing' 1985 Maytag that wouldn't stay put in my new home. The steady balance system worked great. You could test them with an empty tub and a phone book, and it would keep running. Unfortunately, I only got 6 years out of the washer, as the seal went out, and I didn't know it until it took the motor with it. The dryer ran very hot, with a "clunk-clunk" sound as the tub seam went over the rollers. So in conclusion, these were the biggest pieces of junk I ever owned, due to a six year life span. Pathetic

SQ relation

From what i understand they are closely related, but the SQ and
amana branded machines were made in different factories-both
operated by raytheon for a while.Looks like a lot of the parts
are interchangeble, though the SQ has a porcelain coated steel
tub and a plastic tub is seen on the amana version. From what
i have heard on here, one of the big flaws with the amana is
they used a lip seal running directly on an aluminum hub-
a bad,bad idea-very prone to wear from any dirt or other
abrasives in the water as well as corrosion and pitting-
seal then starts to leak and ruins the bearing...
