Faux pas = my bad...

And here I thought the 3.3 cubic foot measurement included the allowance for the agitator...
If I were the manufacturer, I'd skip the "usable capacity" measurement, and stick with the tub cubic foot...
After all, the larger measurement does sound more impressive, and I wonder how much of the average public knows the difference...

Here's what my '97 pair from hell looked like, but I think my washer was a notch higher in the model line. While the washer had very effective long-stroke action, even with "Extra Rinse" selected as a matter of course the rinsing was poor, particularly with towels.

And yeah, the dryer ran way too hot and sounded like a bucket of bolts with sparrows flying around inside.

The painted top on the washer was so cheap compared to the porcelained center dial Maytag it replaced.

The machines pictured have never seen the light of day, because none of the knobs have yellowed.

Yes indeed that is the pair I bought in spring of 2000. They were from the "Goodman Era" of Amana - that is to say, after Raytheon had sold them off and before they were purchased by Maytag. I don't recall how long Goodman owned them - no more than 2-3 years. I never wanted that set. My local appliance store had a Raytheon set on the floor and I told them that was what i wanted. What arrived was a different story but at that point there wasn't much choice.

As I am sure everyone here remembers, the washer lasted 3 years before being done in by the leaking main seal. I will never forget that service nightmare - 3 different servicers and not one diagnosed it. They kept replacing the spin bearing every 5 weeks and of course insisted there was nothing wrong with the machine - the loud squeal while spinning was normal and it was I that was crazy. It was RepairClinic.com that hit the nail on the head and when I mentioned this to the last service person, he waved me away with the old "just because you got the info from the computer, that doesn't mean it is correct". Of course he offered nothing better, but...

The dryer is still chugging along, but runs a lot hotter now than when it was new, I am just biding my time on that one.

No, you didn't want a Raytheon Amana pair either. That's what mine were.

To add insult to injury, Consumers Union had just recently top-rated the Amana washer, which greatly influenced my decision. I let my subscription lapse when it came up for renewal.

Plastic Outer Tub

I suspect the integrity of the plastic outer wash tub on those Amana machines is the cause for the bad seals and bearing issues. Perhaps they just couldn't handle the wide temperature swings of Northern Winters. Hot Wash + Cold Rinse could swing 80 degrees rather quickly...
