I am quite delighted at my find this weekend right here in Georgia, and that is saying something for this AC. I have an Amana 8700 BTU window unit. Would anyone like to guess the age? It has a very large compressor, very similar to a frige compressor. It is quiet, lol, more so than my Amana that is much newer. I have included photos as I find it very hard to find photos of older AC units. I am hoping to get it on youtube as well.

A/C's are like the new washers...the newer ones with the higher number ER's use less energy but really it's built in to reduce energy by cutting back on cooling effectiveness...the repair man told me to open the unit and adjust the thermostat (TWEAK) a little higher and mine now freezes you out...I find this cools really fast and then shuts off in automatic setting...now that saves money to me...and we all like to tweak our appliances..don't we?..

anywho...thats a great find you got there...probably last longer than the newer ones...a little TLC and your both happy!

This unit should have either a tecumseh or copeland piston compresseor in it - I have one like it with low time on it in storage.

If I remember correctly most manufacters stopped using piston compressors on 1.5 ton & lower BTUH units around the end of 1986 - Nowdays They use those rotary compressors whitch have a short life.

This is a Beautiful unit & very well built.

I`ll always remember the 1960`s friedrich window units with the 1750 RPM Tecumseh compressors , I loved the sound of the old 1750 tecumseh`s , Best Compressor ever built.

Congratulations, Nice find !!!!

That looks like the Kenmore ones that our family always bought in the 80's. My parents still have one in their kitchen that is the biggest window unit I've ever seen. It has a large square vent at the right side under the controls. The power saver fan settings quit working several years ago, but the rest is still chugging along. It gets so cold, that I would walk in from cutting the grass sometimes and stand in the stream of air and it would actually hurt where the sweat drops would blow off so fast. Whatever they paid for it, and I'm sure it was expensive, it's been worth it. I would guess that it was rated at least 25,000 BTU. I bet that Amana built that Kenmore.

Right on!

My parents had a 23,000 BTU/h through-the-wall Sears unit....with a 220v 30a DRYER-style plug on it. It had a "super high efficiency" of 6.0 EER ratio! *LOL*

But man could that thing cool and dehumidify!
The electric meter spun like a top!
Its quite a comfort to know no one's is bigger than yours.

Old AC

I had an old mitchell about 1949 model and it finally gave up last year,it was so quiet and cold it felt like you were in a movie house. It was a freon12 unit.Huge but silent compressor.I bought a new Samsung to replace it I hate it,it cycles all the time drives me crazy,Bobby

Kenmore with Side Air Discharge

Dave the Kenmore would have been made by Gibson. They were famous for the air sweep design. They made a version for Kenmore. I believe they also made all of Western Auto's units under Wizard and Citation.

The Amana I have was made in April of 1982. It is a piston compressor...I love that sound. I have an Emerson Quiet Kool with the same compressor.

Holy Shit!! It lasted almost 60 YEARS!!!

We need manufactures to start making appliances that last this long.....again!

Great looking window unit! Here in Texas, air conditioners are a matter of life and death. About ten years ago I was lucky enough to find one of the last "old style" Kenmore units (build date of 2/96) for our kitchen cabin. It's a monster, 18,000 BTU, 220V. Snagged it for $175. We have it mounted in the wall, and it's like walking into a refrigerator when that baby's pumpin'. A real piece of American Iron!

Thermostat went out on it this past "winter" (and I use that term loosely...where else do ya run the AC in December?) and I was thrilled to find that good old Repair Clinic still sells 'em. Just installed it and a new main switch for good measure. The wonderful thing is that as long as I pull it out and oil the motor once a year, that thing will probably keep running and cooling long after I'm dead and gone.

Sad thing about the "new" window units is that they are cheap pieces of Chinese poop, just like everything else these days. Sure, "digital" thermostat and remote control are groovy, but I've had to replace two of them after just THREE YEARS in two of the other cabins! Motors have NO oil ports, and the bottom pans on them are so flimsy and thin that they go out of alignment and the squirrelcage fans rub. Had a brand new one that refused to be quiet, and actually had to rig up a couple of rubber pads to put between the motor housing and the wall that separates it from the squirrel cage to make it work correctly. And I had to pay nearly $400 for this piece of #*&#^$*#&^$ at the Depot. Gimme an old Kenmore any day!

Actually we need to retrain local consumers to recognize, desire and be willing to pay for quality.

Love those side-discharge models, they tend to be quiet!

Although the Friedrich`s were good window units It seemed like the Chrysler Airtemps were the units that lasted the longest, Solid as a rock & drain pans that didn`t rust.

2 weeks ago I pulled 3 - beautiful 1950`s window units from an old building tear down 1 of whitch is a fedders the other a philco & a whirlpool - all 3 have that 1750 rpm tecumseh compressor that refuses to die.

I`ll post pictures of them soon.
