An 80s Hotpoint kinda followed me home....

Ok, it didn't... My neighbours down in Ogden had a garage sale this weekend and I spotted this lurking in the back of their barn. I was a bit hesitant, but when they said I could have it (they, like the other 700 people in Ogden) know I collect washers so....

It's in kinda rough shape, but mostly it's just dirt. It's an interesting control panel - bilingual and with symbols on the dial for regular, delicate, and permanent press fabrics.

This is neat - a mini scrubbing board in the lid! Never knew that Hotpoint did this...

Thats neat. I never knwe Hotpoint ever put a scrub board in any of thier lids. A neat idea though.

However....

When I tested it, the washer failed quite badly... I couldn't get the motor to run. I tried sending it into a spin, but the motor just buzzed and did not run. I tried the getting it to agitate but again, just a buzz. Been there and done that!
So, I don't think this one is going to be joining the collection... I have a few too many projects on the go as it is, but this could be a good learning experience to tear into this (I'd love to get a 50s or 60s GE Filter-Flo machine) BUT space is a concern...
I am willing to part this out to anyone who may need parts from a Hotpoint of this vintage - the timer works, so that alone may be useful to someone!

sometimes when a washer sits unused in dirty conditions,dirt can get in the motor
between the rotor and stator laminations and lock it up-usually they can be
"cracked"loose by forcefully turning the motor shaft untill if frees up.

I managed to get the washer running but there are issues with either the motor or perhaps the transmission...  The motor ran, but got very hot very quickly and popped the breaker on the circuit used for testing, so I think trouble with one of these may be the reason why this got sent to the back of Therese Roy's barn!

Unfortunately, I REALLY have to get this washer out of the garage pronto so I have started stripping it of parts which may still be useful (timer, water level switch, and I have saved the lid scrubbing board) and which anyone is welcome to.

 

Is anyone interested in the wash tub and the 'inner' agitator?   The tub is in great shape - I believe a machine of this era would be an 18 pound capacity.   If anyone is interested,  please let me know how to get the blasted thing out...  the 'inner' agitator won't budge when pulled and if it is to be saved, I don't want to break it.

 

Otherwise, I will have to scrap it on the weekend...

That inner agitator is held in place with a screw, located under the top cap, use a pen knife to slide under and break the glue from it, its only the size of a half dollar, and then using a hex nut driver, remove the screw and the agitator will come out......mine was so rusted that I used a drill to get the head of the screw out, but the screw got so hot that the agitator melted and popped over top of it and came out.....

That agitator is killer.....I have the roto-swirl version......not sure about that one, but mine fits the smaller capacity tranny post connected to the large capacity tub....I don't know why the did this!....but it allows my single speed machine to run a handwash cycle.....it kicks ass compared to the regular roto-swirl

Brian may also want the rimflo filter, spout and splash guard.....in case he wants to do a full conversion from a filter flo for this agitator....just a thought!

Just looking at the top, I question the age. Hotpoint stopped using the side-hinged lid about 1973 on the US models. Any way this machine could be that old? Or, would they have continued to use that top for several more years on the Canadian versions?
