For want of not wanting to look like a rookie here, I must tell ya that out of all my years with fooling with Kenmores, I havent ever had much luck in putting the 2 piece agitators back together correctly. Can anyone tell me an easy solution to this? I work on all brands and may not have the need to fool with a Kenmore for months at a time. I guess this is why I have never mastered such.

An Agitating Question

If you are talking about changing the agitator dogs , if you turn the agitator upside down the new dogs will not drop out. They have a retainer type device on new models but that is how I change them, just did one Friday.

Keith, I know how to change out the dogs, I am asking how to reconnect the top and bottom of an agitator once it becomes seperated for whatever reason it may have happened either due to tech not paying attention to his work detail or carelessness on owners behalf.

change out the dogs

could you post on here or another thread how to replace the agitator dogs because I gave my parents my kenmore set and I think that the dogs in the agitator have gone bad I noticed when I used the washer that the top part of the agitator was not moving so if it is a easy fix then I might try to fix it.thanks for any help. Carl

Carl, changing the dogs is a 10 minute job, tops. Pop the cap or softener dispenser off of the agitator. Under there will be a second cap. It'll be a little hard to reach, but has a good handle on it. Pull that one up, too. With a socket and extension, remove the bolt and washer that were hidden by that cap. Reach into the tub, and lift the entire agitator out, lifting by the bottom fins. Hold the bottom part to the floor with your feet and pull the top part off. Turn it upside-down, and the holder and dogs should fall out. Take the old dogs off and put new ones back in their place. While holding the agitator top upside down, carefully guide the assembled pieces back into place and turn the whole thing right-side up and put it back on top of the agitator bottom. The tricky part is carefully guiding the assembled agitator back onto the transmission shaft splines without having the shaft poke your dog assembly back out the top. It took me about 3 tries the first time, just don't hurry. Hold the agitator bottom with your left hand and use your right to hold the top assembly down and guide it onto the shaft. Now you can bolt the top back down. The inner cap will need to have the seal lubricated with shampoo or Dawn to make it snap easily back into the agitator. Don't even try to put that one back on without lubing the seal since you don't want to damage it. Put the cap or dispenser back on and you're done.
