An Experiment With A Mobile Site For automaticwasher.org

So I just put into the live site some new programming I've been working on for a while. This ***should*** only effect people using mobile phones, but I would appreciate it if everyone would be on the lookout for bugs both mobile and regular computer users because of this change.

If you have a mobile phone like an iPhone or Droid can you guys try out the site and view some threads. I'm going to do this in baby-steps, so the only portion of the site that has gone mobile yet is the navigation bar and the threads themselves. So please view some threads on your phone and let me know how it looks and what kind of phone you have.

Thanks Dave but I'm confused. Are you saying now the font is suddenly smaller on your desktop computer than it used to be before I put this change in?

Looking good Robert. I love that I don't need to zoom in on the thread text to read from an iPhone, regardless of orientation.

Robert, I have very poor eyesight and I was commenting that the view on my phone is vastly inferior to the view from my computer monitor. It's not a fault of programming, just extremely limited screen real estate. The view from my phone today is far better than the phone view last week.

Robert,

It formats quite well on my iPhone 5, the post windows fill the width of the display and the photos format well. I do have to scroll laterally on the thread listing pages but that's a fine trade off, font size is getting too small then anyhow.

It looks good on my iPad also.

Thanks Phillip, I do plan on making a mobile version of the listing pages as well, but I want to do this in baby steps, so I'm just starting with the thread pages and navigation bar at the top. I'll continue working on this soon.

So far everything looks good on my Samsung Galaxy Nexus Android phone.

At first I thought it was going to ask me if I wanted to use the mobile version of the site but instead it just displayed everything aligned within the screen size.

Good for me so far!

Question: I have a very un-smart TracPhone, so I can't surf the web with it. Did automaticwasher.org not work with iPhones, etc. before? I had no idea. The most "mobile" device I use is an iPad, on which AW.ORG works perfectly.

Hi Eugene, no automaticwasher.org always worked on mobile phones that can receive the internet, it's just that I'm starting the long process of reformatting the site with larger fonts and different formats for those small screens that phones have. This new format will only kick in if the server detects it's sending data to a phone.

Excellent!

I was just able to try it last night, when I set my iPhone 3GS to charge. I had to re-login, but this time, I only find myself zooming ever so slightly for the thread list, everything else was fine, so congratulations on that front!

 

If I get the chance, I might do some more looking later on, and with a friends Android, but my quick test last night says its a goer!
