I finally got some live-action footage of the 'new' GE dishwasher that I can share! Unfortunately I can't access the enclosed link myself (network restrictions at the customer's site where I am working) but I am told it works!
I have to say a great big thanks to my hubby, who after being blindsided by my plans to acquire that '66 Maytag top-loader, patiently set up his camera and filmed a series of washing shots! Perhaps he is coming around to the vintage appliances after all...
Just a question for anyone who may own one of these older GE's: do they draw a lot of power?? The breaker on the power bar I had the dishwasher plugged into clicked off a couple of times during the filming. I did manage to splash a lot of water around it though; my plexiglass lid did not provide a perfect seal..

Hey Darrel,
I filled 'er up by pushing the tub into the cabinet and letting the water flow through the inlet funnel - wanted to get some film of that, but didn't have the chance.
The cabinet hasn't been secured yet, so I wasn't able to pull the tub all the way out. I darn near had the thing fall on me twice already!!
I wasn't able to clip the back of the tub (it leaked a bit).
Hoping the next movie is of a load of dishes - my 'maiden wash'!!

Thanks for something we've not seen

I was wondering why the middle of the of the plexi wasn't doing anything, like no water splashing and such. It just had drops staying there. Is that the silverware basket in the way? I was also suprised that there was actually a rythim to the wash action, thinking that it was always swirling the same way all of the time. Facsination!!!

Thanks for the video. I always wanted to know (and still do) how the impellers machines actually got things clean, and some of the newest DW's don't.

K,Aids are still the best of the oldies, however. Why didn't anyone else copy them sooner?

Love that video. Like to see it with some dishes inside.

Very cool - it's surprising so many people didn't get good results with all that water moving around. Is the water fill timed or did they still use the motor-load switch to control the fill?

Nice vid, im sure it was a lot of work. my question please, is the chrome handle in the video, when one would normally push this dishwasher in, does that handle lower a top "assembly" down onto the tank to seal the water in? i never did understand how these rollout dishwashers "capped the tub" when pushed in. Insights into Impeller-wash action

It really is something to see that impeller in action! I now realize that the wash action of this type of dishwasher is based on the rebound of water off the dishwasher tub walls instead of a more direct spray from a wash arm. I now must get my paws on a James or one of the 1960's Tappans that used the "roller" style of impeller!! HEEHEE!

PeterH: the impeller is the 'propeller' style - like a small washing machine agitator is the best way I can think to describe it. The 1967 Viking top-loader I grew up with had a propeller style impeller. Oh, and I probably didn't have the full water load in there; my plexiglass cover leaked a bit!

Darrel: You got it - I am waiting for a shipment of type 43 bulbs. Hopefully that will get the dial glowing again!

Courtney: the silverware basket wasn't in place, but it does go right in the centre of the lower rack. Methinks this may not be the greatest place for it - the later GE top-loaders and pull-outs had the silverware basket suspended at the front of the machine in line with the upper rack. It makes sense since the water flow seems to be hitting the outer edges of the tub hardest.

alr2903: you're right on the money with the handle you see in the video; it lowers or raises the tub lid to seal it in. It even has the word 'dishwasher' engraved on it! How sweet is that??
