...and speaking of vintage GE dryers,

A dream-machine came home from Pennsylvania a couple of days ago:

I've never seen this machine in the steel, or in photographs, only in a specification sheet stolen from my Father's files on our house, 40 some years ago. That sheet  was offered in the Ephemera site a couple of months ago along with it's mates. It's the dryer that should have been the mate to our neighbor's WA-750V, but it was either unavailable when Marion bought it or she wanted to save a few bucks and went with the BOL (same  basic model, lacking pedestals, two heat options, a drum light and the all-important illuminated dial).

This model should have had an automatic cycle, but for some reason, this year, GE decided to offer a full-featured exclusively timed control model with 4 temperature selections. These buttons feel just like the buttons on a Maytag A806

There are many issues; some rust, missing screws to hold the top down to the cabinet. At some point the drum was taken out and work must have been done on the innards because one of the screws is not OE. There is some unidentified gunk on the back of the drum. I think it must be residue from years of dryer sheets because the smell is in there. The lint filter, however, is in pretty good condition. And there is a drum light that is intact.

The Art department that did the electrical schematic is the same person/group that did the wonderfully detailed schematics for the dishwashers at the time (I'll post a better picture later on):

I'm getting really tired of plugging-in vintage GE dryers and hearing: KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG! KA-bANG!

I know, I know; y'all don't give a damn.

I'm going to have to turn to Appliance Jedi Master L. Fever and learn the ways of the slide.

 

Pity; not a candidate for daily driver. This dryer is going to need more work than I can give it at this time in my life. It will have to been wrapped up and left for retirement hobby time. Not only are the rollers flattened, but the dryer starts without pushing the START button and runs whenever the dial is turned into the main cycle zone and the door is closed. Also, the dryer doesn't operate, nor does the lovely dial light-up when it's turned into the FLUFF portion of the dial. Oh-well. At least I have my dream machine, aged and slightly broken.

 

After all, tomorrow is another day.

Kens Dream GE Dryer

The problems you describe do not sound all that insurmountable Ken so maybe you can bring it down to the appliance hospital some time. It is interesting that you commented that the push-buttons feel just like MTs PBs, because most of MTs PB switches were made by GE.

Woo hoo for dream machines found!

Congrats, Ken! Last time I saw one of those was back in 96 or 97 in pink no less. Actually, working on this one will be fun and the effort will make her yours even more. The mechanicals aren't really that bad and should be done anyway for a proper job. I have faith that between you and John, this one will be drying up a storm in no time!

I'm happy for you Ken.

A neighbor had the set like that, but the dryer did not have the economy setting. I wonder how much good it would yield if the dryer was in a heated space in the winter or in an air conditioned space in the summer with the longer drying times pumping all of that heated or cooled air outside. We do love our dial and drum lights.
