Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Yes, very '70's. Do you remember the similarly-styled Modern Maid which had a dishwasher where the lower oven should be? I knew people who had one (in avocado, natch) and I thought it was the coolest idea.

Thanks for this bit of nostalgia, Launderess. Your diligent searches of e-bay produce many of my favorite AW.ORG photo postings. A big Frigilux hug to you.

I remember the Modern Maid 3 in 1 as my best friends mother had one in the late 60's or early 70's. It was the only one I have ever seen then and since but I can't even remember what color it was though poppy red comes to mind. They're probably as rare as hens teeth these days.

Calling Rich/Sudsmaster

I believe you mentioned that you found one of these rare Modern Maid units a while back...very neat!! Does yours have the original dishwasher, and you have any pictures? I'd love to see what design the DW is...I'm guessing D&M.

I read somewhere that in a Modern Maid 3-in-1, the main oven was on top, with the cooktop in between and the dishwasher in place of the bottom oven. It was a separate unit as well, and could be removed and replaced (though the new one wouldn't necessarily match!).

And here's an interesting FAQ about the Modern Maid "Cook n Clean Center" as it was called. It does mention that the dishwasher was indeed a D&M-design machine...mystery solved!

anyone looking for a MM 3-in-1 center, chk out Alex, VA...

condominium community we used to live in called Auburn Village. Located about 1 mile so of Crystal City. ALL the 200 +/- units had these installed when the place went condo in 80 or 81. At the time I knew nothing about classic appliances (1993) and several local appliance dealers said that the DW was not a separate unit and due to the cooktop design one could not simply switch it out with say a Kitchenaid (their words, not mine). I gave up with trying to upgrade with the final verdict from a local MM repair shop. So, we kept the unit whole until we sold in 2002. All was still working then. If you live in that area you could leave your # with the mgt as they publish a newsletter (sorry I no longer have it but area code is 703). Some of these condos have been undergoing major renos since '02 and you could probably pick one up for nothing at the curb. Cooktop and oven worked wonderfully, DW did too but was noisy.

Yes, launderess it does take me back!

I remember the three popular appliance colors of the day. Coppertone, avocado green, and harvest gold!
