In small 1940s and 1950s tract houses, having extra pots and pans storage was often more important than having two ovens. Most people don't use a second oven all that often, though it's certainly nice to have one when you want to use one. But in a tiny tract house kitchen with only a few feet of cabinets, that side storage compartment was a big hairy deal.
In 1950, the average new house was only 850 square feet, and a lot of them (like mine!) were smaller than that. Storage was scarce. In the '60s and '70s, average square footage rose to only 1200-1400 square feet or so. Average today for new houses is just over 2500 square feet, so you can have a bigger kitchen with all the cabinets you like. And, of course, two ovens.

My Aunt Beulah, one of dads sisters lived in a small house that had a tiny kitchen, On one wall was a cabinet water heater and sink, on the other wall was the washer, El cheapo one dial Kenmore, on the other wall a small table and the other wall held the range, a budget 40 inch GE, the kitchen had 3 doors coming into it and a small pantry, if it were not for the 3 storage drawers on the stove she would have never had any place for the few pieces of cookware she had, ...me, on the other hand,I LOVE two ovens!!!
