Another Holy Grail Washer For The Vintage Emphorium

A tale of communication and co-operation.

Having acquired Miele push button dishwasher (actually two if them) and tumble dryer I had been looking for a long time for a washing machine to complete the set.

Way back in 1985 I had seen one of these machines in the domestic appliance department of the John Lewis Partnership Oxford Street London and I have wanted one ever since. There was no possibility back in the 1980s that I could ever have afforded such a machine.

Move forward to last Sunday evening (19th Feb) I got a text message from Richard (Ricky 5050) of a machine he thought I might be interested in which had been advertised for sale. Richard did the necessary bidding (10p) and shortly I heard from the seller and made arrangements to pick it up this week. It was the machine i had been waiting nearly 32 years for.

It seems that this machine has a selector switch to decide the quantity of fabric softener to be used

And something I had never seen before

It has a fabric softener reservoir under the bottom panel. This machine still has the decor panels from original owner's (seller's mother) kitchen

I did not have the time to do a water test but did a spin and it seemed to work fine on that. Rather like the Keymatic, once you select a cycle the indicator moves round to the start of the selected programme.

Of course this machine has a solid door so you cannot see much more than the clip I posted above.

However back in 2010 another collector took one of these machines and put a conventional front on it.

Congratulations! That's a nice find. There were several models of these series. Actually I had never seen one with the softener reservoir.

Yours has the separate temperature dial, there were also models with the temperature integrated in the cycle choice with the touch buttons. These models had three or four push buttons on the left, depending on the model.

There were touchmodels with just the glass door.

The electronic W7 series is much better than the W4 series. When Miele introduced the electronic models, they had problems with the control board. Quite a few of these machines had to be repaired or even replaced.

I'd like a fabric softener reservoir system. Makes a lot of sense to me

Congratulations it'll look great with the dishwasher and dryer all side by side. That Dishmaster looks like it might be fun to use too.

Incredible find - for 10p you gets a top of the range Miele! Great stuff.
