Another Local Appliance Store Gone

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Ken, It just goes to show you that the appliance manufacturers make special runs for Lowes and Home Depot. I do not think you are getting the same quality as if you bought it at an appliance store. In our area there are not that many left. PC RIchards is a big chain here. They sell the original brand/model number from the manufacturer.

Sometimes, you can't compare apples to apples...

Yeah, that's a common trick. Home Cheepo wants an 'exclusive' model, so they take a common model and add or remove some minor item. Either add a buzzer shut off (or remove it), change the graphics on the console, the color of the knobs or have one extra neon indicator light for the extra rinse and BAM!, you have a exclusive model that no one else has... Wards was a great example. Our washer model number would be a 'LAT9316AAE' and Wards would change it to a 'LAT8926AAE' for example. Made it impossible to price shop over the phone.

The same scam has been going on in other industries for decades, e.g. with mattresses. 90% of coil spring mattresses produced in the U.S. use the exact same Leggett & Pratt springs, and a similar number use the exact same cheap foams that don't last more than a year before they start to collapse.

Some people pay $400 for this bed, others pay $2500.

Local Appliance Store Undercuts the Big Box Guys

Here in Seattle, there's still (at least) one local appliance dealer (Albert Lee) who carries a huge selection of all the major brands - including the high end manufacturers - and still manages to beat pricing on the Big Box Guys. Within the past 13 months I bought a new refrig-freezer & washer and dryer. I was determined to purchase from one of our long-time local dealers, even if I had to pay a premium; but that little scenario never played-out. Instead, I was greeted with local store pricing that was 10-15% lower than the "already discounted" Big Box pricing. Besides sending the money to a local business, I had great personalized service, delivery and installation, too boot-! Wow - just as in the "good old days..." but still here, if you just take the time to look.

This is a subject near & dear to my heart, since this is my life. It's definitely not easy today for the small dealer to survive. The big boxes have a lot of business advantages over the small dealer: buying power, location, sometimes a bigger selection, their own credit cards, access to a big line of credit, etc. That being said, the boxes also have drawbacks. At my store, you deal with the owners. I've never met Mr. Depot or Mr. Lowes, and I believe Mr. Sears is long gone. The little guy has to do things differently to survive. At some meetings, we've met dealers that charge for every little thing, and then turn around and complain about lack of business. At our store, you always get a new cord for your new stove or dryer. We don't make you pay extra. We deliver free of charge to the 1st floor or basement (and you do not even need to pay for it 1st and apply for a delivery rebate and hope to get it in 6-8 weeks). If, when installing your new dryer, we see that you need a new piece of venting, we'll swap out the old stuff. FREE! Yes, this costs us some $, but it also generates good will with the customer. We are a small dealer and choose to remain that way. We've sold Maytags since the early 1930's. We used to be the only Maytag dealer in our county. Now there are over 15 retail locations that sell Maytag within a 15-20 mile radius. We also sell used appliances and do not deal in junk or vintage. That seems to be where the market is nowdays. Other than the fine folks on this board, people do not want the old harvest gold beltdrive WP/KM, coppertone refrigs, avacado ranges, etc.

Now, the big boxes do not always have lower prices than the little guy. On the BOL models, yes, the box stores kill us. We won't make $20 to sell the BOL. On the other hand, price a mid-line or TOL model with us, and 9 out of 10 times, our price will be the same or less than those guys. (example HD & Lowes on Maytag EpicZ mhwz600tw $849, us $775)

The thing that slays me though, when we get into an old customer's home for service & we see a new Maytag something or other and they say, oh we didn't know you sold new ones. DUH, we sold you the last one you had! There is no loyalty today. We understand that you may not want the brand we sell, fine, but to buy the same that we sell and not even get price shopped. That hurts.

Well that's enough of a late afternoon ramble. LOL!

Appliances aren't the only things made with less quality

A good friend of mine has the local John Deere franchise for mowers, tractors of all sizes and everything else they sell. Well Home Depot just opening up the street less than a mile. They carry the John Deere line of mowers. Not the same machine at all. Much cheaper price at HD but also a much cheaper machine in itself. Of course he has to charge more than HD because he is getting the machines as they were meant to be made, top shelf. The funny thing about this is how they worked out their warranty and service work. He has a contract with HD since he is the local dealer and does all their work for them. What hurt him in the beginning is now a big chunk of repair and warranty work for his business.
