I'm in the market for a new mattress and specifically wondering if anyone has had any luck with those Spa Sensation pocket coils from Walmart that come vacuum packed in a bag and box. They appear to get good reviews . I really don't want to fork out another fortune on a mattresss like my last one (Sealy Postupedic) and be disappointed again.. The thing was a piece of garbage. These one's are less than $300. I don't need the box spring etc, that's all still good.

New Mattress

I used to work for a little mom and pop mattress store in my state. They actually still hand made mattress and to work there you had to go to the factory and build a set so you knew what you were selling. Based on my experience there here are some things I learned.

With most things in life but mattresses in particular, you get what you pay for. Most mattresses today are made one-sided. They claim all you need to do is "rotate" the mattress every so often. True the cost is less for these sets but, think about it, there is literally HALF a mattress there. If you ask me they are still charging too much for these sets. You'll be lucky to get 4-6 years of use out of it. You will start to notice body imprints which affect your sleep and how rested you wake up and body aches ect.I will always buy two-sided mattresses that can be flipped AND rotated. Yes, these cost more but will last much longer.

What really matters with coil mattresses is the thickness of the wire used in the coil. The thicker the better it will hold up, longer use and comfort. Also the thickness and density of the foam.

There were issues in the mattress industry with "pocket coils". These are individually wrapped coils as opposed to traditional coils which are secured together with wire both across and up an down. The issues they were seeing was where the mattress takes the most weight and wear (the rear end) was breaking down. Each pocket coil was basically falling over in different directions. I'm sure this issue has been addressed by now but it's Walmart so eh?

I hope this helped. Any questions or concerns feel free to ask. Good luck!

I'm not sure where you live

but if you can find an outfit that sells directly to customer, that might be a good option.

I only have experience with innerspring types so I cannot comment on water beds, air beds, foam etc.

For my money, we have an outfit in Pitt called Original Mattress factory. Started by a chap that used to work for Sealy, they make their units and sell them in their own stores. They sell real 2 sided mattresses and you can customize them to a point like having foam bolsters placed in the outer coils to provide a firmer edge. I've had my set for 11 years now and I sleep very well on it (queen size)

If your locale has such an option, I recommend it.

I would not buy a brand name mattress. Especially the so-called "never flip". That is nothing more than a total bunch of marketing BS. THere is no such thing as "technology" that makes these things special. All they do is leave out the padding, etc on one side (thus saving costs) and promoting it to the lazy ass who refuses to flip and rotate. And true to form, the typical American moron fell for it (but you still pay full retail for essentially half a bed!)

FWIW, nearly every outfit buys the innerspring coils from Legget & Platt.

do you not like memory foam? Mind is an easy rest bamboo gel infused memory foam mattress in king size I paid 500 for. Doesn't get hot and it's a good in between. So much so I bought the roommate one

My hubby

has a herniated disk, so we have had a few different sets over 21 years.
After the Stearns and Foster I had from 1987, we got another which we had for about 9 years. It was labeled correct comfort. Very comfortable. Still was US made.
Then we got a Dormia hybrid made in upstate NY. It had baffles and memory foam at the top. It was too warm in the summer, and we sank too much into it. We had it 7 years. It was still under the 20 year non pro rated replacement warranty. We did not want another.
About 5 years ago went back to a Stearns and Foster extra firm with a luxury padded top. Still great, but made in Mexico, as are Sealy's now.
Many stores have computer calibration beds which help you select the proper firmness. We used it.

New Mattress

I bought a new King Sized mattress about three monts ago, after shopping several stores and being overloaded with choices and prices I just bough the top rated Foam mattress that CRs listed, It is a Costco Novaform 14" Serafina Pearl Gel, it was the best $900 I spent in many years.

I can't believe how well I sleep now, many mornings I don't want to get out of bed, I used to think that a mattress did not make that much difference.

Jim (warmsecondrinse) can give his thoughts on the WalMart mattress. He purchased one a couple years ago. He was very satisfied at the time and I believe has continued to be.

We have a Sealy mattress. It's one of the most expensive things we've ever bought, but worth every penny. It's so supportive and comfortable at the same time.

Get a Sleep Number. You'll never have to buy another bed again.

They don't wear out or wear down, like coil spring bed.

I bought a new bed in 2002 and sold it in 2013. I sold only because I thought I could get the same comfort with a typical air mattress, but no. I'll soon be getting a new Sleep-number.

No problems. Great service. Highly recommend. They will ship it to your house, no need to have a big truck and delivery people if you don't want.

Got a Springair back in 95 with a 20 year warranty. Slight pillow top, very comfy and true double sided.
Still using it and of course they went bankrupt and some crap mattress company bought their name and still sell them.
No idea if the quality is still there but they were excellent back then and still happy with mine.

I've emailed Sleep Number because I can't seem to find an retailers here in Ontario Canada. I did sleep on one a few years ago at a hotel in Windsor. I should have tried one out at the store near Detroit a couple of years ago while our dollar was near par.. right now it would cost me about 30% more with our dollar being so low.

I also emailed Sealy to ask about their Hybrid Kelburn model which CR rated quite high to see if it's available in Canada. It is apparently at Sears but it's called the Hybrid Stillwater.. So I'll pop around to Sears soon and hopefully they'll have a display to try... and hopefull before the store closes permanently LOL.

It's tiresome looking at mattresses.. I was in Sleep Country yesterday and there's so many to choose from it makes your head spin. I just don't want to spend a fortune and not be happy. That's why I'm wondering about those ones from Walmart.

Mattresses From Walmart

I can't imagine how you could get a good nights sleep on a Mattress from Walmart, just lying there thinking about how poorly they pay their workers that get almost no benefits. And where the profits go some of which are funneled to right wing causes that are against what are in 98% of Americans best interests, no sorry, I have never spent a cent in a Walmart and plan on never doing so.

Well, to each his own. But.... I HATE Sleep Number beds. Never could get comfortable, I'd rather sleep on an air mattress.

At some point I will need a new mattress, mine is pushing 20 years. Simmons Beautyrest. Always flip and rotate it. Starting to sag a bit. Will only consider a regular mattress, coil, flipable, not pillow top. Might be hard to find by time I'm in the market.

I guess I will be in the market for a new bed soon too. I want to get rid of my waterbed for various reasons. One thing though, it is the most comfortable bed I ever had. I'm not looking forward to finding something that is at least something half as comfortable. Has anyone made the change from a waterbed to a regular bed?

We bought a Kingsdown Mattress..

Our bed was 12 years old and really needed to be replaced. True to my style I spent months researching different brands and types. I figured if I was going to plop down that kind of money I wanted to be sure I was making a good decision. In the end it came down to either the Sleep Number or this Kingsdown mattress that uses the computer program to determine the type of support you need.

We both went to the store and got on this mattress and after about 10 minutes of watching this computer screen do it's thing, moving around to different positions, it came out with the configuration we each needed. The computer program also listed all the other brands the store sold (and which level of firmness) that would be compatible with our needs if we didn't want the custom route. So in the end it's a custom mattress made to our support needs. And it was about $3K less than the equivalent sized Sleep Number. We did spring for the adjustable base and I'm glad we did. It really takes the pressure off your back and helps with a very restful sleep. We've had it about 6 weeks or so now and so far so good. This particular bed is a mixture of springs and foam so I guess it falls into the Hybrid category.

This particular mattress has a full 10 year warranty complete parts and labor on the mattress and base including all the mechanicals for the base. I'm still a little bit in post spending shock because I'm not used to making purchases that big but I'm sleeping much better and not waking up with a sore back and neck like I was towards the end of the run on the old mattress. Some companies offer a longer warranty but I figured after 10 years it would be time to replace it again anyway so it seemed reasonable to me.

BTW, I took the recommendation made here for the Cozytown Linens Company and we love these sheets. I ordered them with the wings for the adjustable base and they are great. I recommend these as well to anyone needing new sheets.

We bought our cal-king Restonic Orthotonic mattress and boxsprings in August 1984 and they are still comfortable, supportive and the ticking still looks like new since we've always kept a good pad and cover on it. We turn it and flip it regularly. It was built so that the center of the mattress is firmer and has more support since most of our body weight is located in that area. At the time it was the best set in the store we bought it from and I just looked at the receipt, it cost $599.99! Pretty good service from this purchase. But if we were going to buy another set we'd want another two sided, innerspring set for all the same reasons stated by others.

And Louis, I did used to have a waterbed in the early 70's. In 1976 I moved into an upstairs apt. they prohibited waterbeds. Since I was young, broke and had just shot my wad on moving I couldn't afford a new bed so I went to the Salvation Army Thrift store and bought an old fashioned set of bedsprings (the kind that don't have a fabric covering) for $2.00 and a sterilized, used double bed mattress for $20.00, it was pretty old as it had the old fashioned striped ticking that at that time hadn't been used for several years. I put the springs and mattress in the pine waterbed frame. This bed was hella comfortable, and anyone that ever slept in it with me (I was single then) said the same thing. When I got married my husband is 6'5" so finally after 3 yrs. of suffering we got the cal-king we have now.

Just called Sleep Number, they don't sell them in Canada anymore.. Went to Sears to try the Sealy Kelburn hybrid that got the good rating in CR.. Actually it is quite comfortable but it's $1300 aaarrggghh... It's not really any cheapr in the US either I may have to bite the bullet.

Louis.. we had a waterbed for 10 or so years back in the 80's.. it had baffles in it so it wasn't all that floaty. Gene loved it.. I found it a bit too warm

Hey Pete, there's a mattress store in the Distillery District in Toronto. They have a mattress set for $110,000....yes $110,000! :-) I lay on the bed a couple of summers ago when I was touring around....I didn't notice any difference from a regular mattress. The beds are made in Sweden.
