I must admit that I have always liked vintage vacuums and they were probably the first thing I started collecting 'cause they were easy to sneak into the house! I had always wanted a Hoover 'convertible' though, and finally, about a year ago, I found this one. I didn't really start using until this year because I only put down the rug in the parlor last fall and since we got Echo, well, I needed something that would do a good job on the rug!
This lovely Model 617 was scored on craigslist for $10, if you can believe it!

This is the vacuum that I would really like to get a set of cleaning tools for, so if anyone ever hears of one, please let me know!!
Question: would the hose adapter slide into the back of the vacuum housing? That would be my guess, but I wasn't sure...

Another question - how do you replace the light on a model like this? I couldn't see any obvious screws, levers or other fasteners to hold the motor housing cover or the light lens in place. I did not want to risk breaking anything, so I thought I would ask...

I am guessing that the hose does connect in the back. I remember my mother had a Hoover upright. I don't THINK it was exactly like that one, but I do seem to recall that the attachment hose connected to a port on the bottom back of the machine.

I wish I could remember more, but that vacuum was taken out of service when I was in elementary school someplace. A long time ago...maybe the year I got my pet pterodactyl.

Very nice hoover there! I think that was the model 67 here in the US.

Yep the hose slid into the back in that little narrow channel you see where the model number and serial number are stamped.

As to replacing the headlight...

on the base of the machine, there should be 2 prominent screws on the main metal cast part in the base.

These screws hold on the hood. Take them off, turn the machine over and pull up the hood. The lens cap is just sitting in a little groove.

The bulb is easy to access now. :)

Hope that helps.

Here is where the screws may possibly be. I think canadian models were always slightly different. But they are in the general area of the ovals I believe.

:)

Brandon is correct Paul, remove those two screws and the hood should come off and you will see where the bulb is. It might be fun to have the attachments but take my word for it they will be of little use. The Convertibles were great on carpet but left much to be desired as far as the suction with the tools IMHO.

Paul,

I have a Model 68 which has the all turquoise handle, but otherwise is the same as yours, and just love it. I found mine about a 1 1/2 months ago on the 2nd day of an estate sale. It was marked 50% off, and it came with about 20 bags as well. It has great suction, and is very easy to maneuver.

Converter Hose

You need the rear converter hose to trip the high speed switch to get greater suction when using the hose. Hoover did make a front converter later that fits over the nozzel opening but it doesn't trip the high speed switch. be sure to operate the vacuum in the highest pile position too when using attachments.

An aletrnative .....

Paul,
I can appreciate that you might want the tools to make the Hoover "complete", but they are almost a complete waste of time. Whilst the Hoover will do a great job on your rugs, the suction through tools is very low - largely because the converter cannot (and never could due to its design) make a tight seal on the fan. I would suggest you look out for a Lux 88 or 89 for your non carpeted areas and for dusting. You dont necessarily need one with a power head as you have the Hoover for rugs. The Lux is also amazingly quiet.

The link is to a current vacuumland thread where you will see the Lux - made in Canada too :) I had the pleasure of using one of these cleaners at Pete's when I was over last month - it is just great :)

Thanks for the input and info!

Thank you all for the advice and tips - I will try wandering over into vacuumland one of these days! Someone there may need a set of older Hoover upright tools that I need to find a home for, too!
I guess I was interested in getting the tools to complete the look of the machine more than anything.
