You never know what will turn up in the classifieds... Check this out - I found it on the Montreal Kijiji site this evening! Naturally, I sent them an email... Hubby will be even more annoyed than usual - why? 'Cause I know where I can get the matching dryer!!
Here's an overall photo of the machine from the ad:

Wow!

Good luck definitely! That is beautiful! So mint looking.

I would call that a money shot, aka, shooting my money to the seller as fast as I can! lol

Very nice.

Super!

I had to look at the calender to check if this was still May... That will be a stunning set! By the way, if hubby has too much of a problem, get me his number so the Maytag Man can explain the way things happen... LOL!

Hey Paul

Machines are dropping on you like coins out of the slots at the Canadian Casinos. Great luck, Buddy.

Looks like that machine has more or less the same capabilities as the 206 you recently picked up.

It also looks like you've got a beautiful matched pair in your future!

Nice going!

Paul, the pair of those is going to look killer, especially all lit up at night. Looking forward to seeing more photos.

First the good news...

I heard back from the seller - I was the first to contact her about the machine and although I am not going to be able to actually see the machine until next Monday, she very generously and courteously offered to consider the machine sold until I tell her otherwise (like THAT is going to happen!!). So, that means I will have to scramble to Sherbrooke on Saturday and say a couple of prayers that the dryer is still available...

Now the bad news...

Hubby's NOT impressed...
However, I do realize that I am going to have to make some room for the 'Tags. That being the case, I will be needing to find new homes for the A206 that I just got and very possibly also the '58 GE Clothes Conditioner dryer...
The A206 is going for what I paid for it - FREE! The dryer, please contact me.

You know..

He must be mellowing! He hardly batted an eyelid when the A206 arrived and when I got the latest Whirlpool dishwasher - I guess nearly 19 years together (that will be official next Tuesday) has maybe almost got him to appreciate vintage appliances. OK, that and the fact that I would sulk for weeks... LOL

A question...

I am probably be able to fit the washer into the back of the station wagon but it will have to be on its back... I moved the Inglis that way with no issues but I managed to drain most of the transmission oil out of the Frigidaire when I moved it. Would something bad happen to the Maytag if I move it on its back?? I know the dryer is probably not going to fit (the Maytag dryers of this vintage are like 30 inches wide - wider than the washers, IIRC).

Would something bad happen to the Maytag if I move it on its

Unlikely with the proper precautions. Take pillows or blankets and stuff them inbetween the tub and the cabinet. You want to keep the tub mech from moving around and possibly damaging the out of balance lever. If you had a tub block (or they did) this would solve that problem in a much easier way. Also, TAPE THE LID. You'd think this would be automatic but it happens where they don't and then you get consolus damagicus when the lid smacks the timer/console. you can lower the drain hose and get pretty much all the water out that way.

You can transport the machine on any side except the front. Transmission oil won't leak unless there's a leak already in progress. The tub really should be centered and padded so it won't bash against the cabinet and deform the metal tub gasket ring. Before I got a tub block, I used 4-6 blankets packed around tub.

Dan, Andrew - Thanks for the advice! Never thought about using pillows in the tub to keep it centred. I will definitely make a point of doing so!! I learned the hard way about not taping tub lids - trust me!!!
Pete: I can't be sure of the year but I was told it was purchased when the house where it now lives was built in 1960.
I am so excited!! I will be heading to the appliance store where I had seen the dryer tomorrow... Keeping my fingers crossed!!

A702

Nice Maytag - the slightly younger brother to my '61 A700!

I think you are probably looking at '63-'65 or so on an A702 for the build date. My A700 was made in November of '61 and I think the A702 model replaced it shortly thereafter. One of the Maytag experts can probably confirm this.

If you can get the serial number, we can decode it too.

Good luck!

Andrew S.

Got the dryer!

I was doing my 'happy dance' when I called the thrift store in Sherbrooke to see if the Maytag dryer (that will be paired up with the washer I found last week) was still available and learned that it was!! My neighbor in Ogden generously offered to pick it up for me, too. But get this, when he got there, the store hiked the price to $200! The other dryers they had on the floor were around $100-110... My neighbour did not take too kindly to this and got the price down to $120... Amazing how the price goes up when people know they have someone interested in an older piece... Swine...
ANYWAY, putting all the bitterness aside, this is what came to stay in Ogden!

The cabinet had a few scuffs and scrapes, nothing too horrible - it cleaned up very nicely! I then had to take it apart to check out the electrical and mechanical components. First surprise - a end of cycle signal bell!

I didn't realize there was a pilot light either - the bulb was burnt out, so I changed it. I checked out the motor and filter area - looks like the folks at the thrift store did some spring cleaning for me! There was no dreaded lint build-up. I was kind of surprised by that white socket to the left of the drum pulley. According to the wiring diagram this is for a germicidal lamp! I didn't have one, so I subbed a C9 base bulb temporarily.
Funny spot for the germicidal lamp, no??

Oh, and did I mention that I have the wiring diagram?? If anyone else should need a DE700 wiring diagram, here it is! I will be scanning this for future reference, too.

110V test

I didn't have time to play electrician and rig up a 220v extension in garage, so I hooked up just the 110v feed. The lights came on, the motor started and the drum turned smoothly! I initially thought I had a timer issue - it didn't seem to advance when I did the first test. However, I hooked it up on it's own and the motor ran and the dial did advance... When I hooked it up again, the dial advanced and at the end of the cycle - the bell chimed about every 30 or 40 seconds to remind you "DUDE! Your clothes are dry!"

Twilight shot

Just before heading out for the evening, I had to take one of the console and drum lights. The control panel light works, too! Yahoo!! I can't wait to get the washer and let their soft glow illuminate the laundry room in Ogden!!

Just one last shot of the control panel!
I didn't get all of the serial number of the dryer, but it ended in LV (I think those may be the date codes) - I am going to guess 1962 or 1963 for the year...
Now, I will 'close the deal' on the washer tomorrow night, but I have a wee dilemma... The Ford station wagon we use as our summer car kind of conked out on us as we headed back to Montreal... Come hell or high water though, that Maytag washer will be in Ogden soon! Stay tuned!!
