I just figured out that after my Maytag fills, I can turn the timer dial to the RETURN SUDS setting and the Maytag will agitate for as long as I want it too. I am just giddy!!
With the Maytag agitating a Hot water load of my whites for a half hour ( with bleach)... my whites are not just white. They're are Really White!!! :D

I always wondered why the automatics didn't include the 'Hold' option with their cycles that the wringers had on their timers. You should be able to allow the washer to run as long as you want on the wash, rinse, or spin cycles.

MAYTAG SUDSSAVER WASHERS

MT did this on purpose because people who bought suds-savers often had been owners of wringer washers. Needless to say if you leave your clothes in bleach water for half an hour or more all your doing is destroying the rubber parts of the washer and your clothes. The bleach will do its maximum whiting in just 3 or 4 minutes the detergent will also work better if it has a chance to work before the bleach goes in.

Yes, "Combo52" is Right

I agree with you 100%. ...Lady

Kenmore, that is; built this feature in their "timed" bleach dispensers decades ago.

It allows the detergent to do its' job before the bleach is introduced, thus automatically dispensing it the last four minutes of the wash cycle!!!

'Don't know if this was a " patented" feature, but most upgraded laundry systems use this very "timed bleach" feature on their machines across the board today.

Another thing that is going to show up eventually is accelerated wear to the fabrics. Maytag automatics were never very gentle to begin with, even without the bleach. You need to remember that Maytag conventional washers had wider tubs so the load was not forced as close to the agitator as in the automatics and, most of the time in the conventional washers, bleach was not added to the wash water regardless of how long loads were allowed to wash.

bleach in wash MT conventional washers

Hi everyonee, just chiming in here and I know that my grandmother always washed with a MT wringer machine, round tub, white with blue trim, nice machine !!! LOL
If she used bleach was always the 1st load of clothes, and then about 2 or 3 loads of lighter clothes before she started the dark ones........
she always said that bleach was done working by the time she got to the darker clothes, her whites were always white white and the colors were always bright......
she also used blueing in the 2nd tub rinse....
am just saying :)

bleach and bluing

I don't add the bleach at the beginning. I should have clarified that. I learned that the hard way when my grandmother was teaching me laundry when I was a kid, I ruined a shirt by pouring raw bleach on it. I add bleach after the detergent has a chance to do it's job. My white towels have been really, really white since I have been using the Maytag. Now to score a matching white dryer for it. :D
P.S. I use bluing on the rinse
