We love the 1948 GE Combo that we installed in the kitchen last Fall so much...

That we bought a 1950's Hotpoint Combo for the basement.

Anyone know what year this one is? I am thinking about 1955-56. This one is a little larger than the 48, and it has storage in the doors.

closeup!

Thanks to Kenny (Goatfarmer) for spotting this on Craigslist! Bought it for $100.00 In Auburn Indiana.

Cleaned it up, installed a grounded 3 wire cord, and moved it into the basement the next day. The door gaskets are even in wonderful shape!

I really like this Hotpoint Combo, but I LOVE the 1948 G.E. Combo even more! (and my boyfriend, even though he is royal PAIN sometimes)

I'm just guessing here, but I think by '55 or '56 they no longer had a latching mechanism on the doors but that may only apply to GE. It does look to be more mid than early 50's vintage, and it's really beautiful.

OH Rick, the Hotpoint is, well, uh, HOT! Looks like it has an enamel finish but is almost too white to have lasted this long in this shape. It wouldn't be a porcelain finish, would it? With it being the larger unit I suspect it is the 10 cubic foot model. With the latches and door shelves, I'd guess it is a 52 through 54.

Soft gaskets too? Wow...

Now that GE of yours. Uggggg, it truly is unbelievable. The '51 is very jealous (however, no signifigant other to pose with in the photo!)

I still need to get the new door seal installed. I'm suspecting that once installed I'll see a dramatic decrease of frost in the refrigeration compartment.[this post was last edited: 5/3/2010-21:58]

Beautiful Hotpoint

We had one just like that model growing up, I believe it is a 1953 or 1954 model refrigerator. It was a great machine that was replaced in 1973 as the door handle to open the refrigerator started to go bad and the door wouldn't open. I see that the butter door is missing and the swingout leftover bin is missing also. I think third wire shelf is missing too along with the cover for the vegtable bins. But it doesn't matter. What's nice about this frig is that it has a lighted freezer with an ice tray shelf, it's quiet and holds alot of food. The Super Store frig looks great! Enjoy it as it should hold up well.

Very nice, Rick. Your mint-green GE is just spectacular. In this month's BH&G magazine, they have a lady who collects things in that color and decorated with them in her kitchen beautifully.

I love the 2-door GE's, so very 50's!
Ben, that GE looks fantastic in your kitchen - and counters, hardware and the sink is done! Yay!

Very Cool, Rick!!

Love your GE and Hotpoint refrigerators.. That Hotpoint looks brand new! I cannot believe you scored it for $100.00! What a deal! Hope you are doing great...

Thanks guys!

The Hotpoint has the original paint. I used some touchup paint on a couple chips, then auto polishing compound, and finished with a coat of wax.

Ben, your kitchen is looking BEAUTIFUL these days! I LOVE the natural wood floor too! Your 51 looks right at home there.

Gotta love these old GE/Hotpoint combos!

A tight fit?

Yes, it is a tight fit because of the huge furnace we have. My partner crushed the edge of the pipe slightly, so it would not touch the side of the fridge. You have to leave a few inches of space on the hinge side of these old fridges, otherwise the door will not open all the way. So we had to "crowd" the fridge on the "pipe" side.

Fabulous!!

And most people dont realize, those two will use less power than one of todays so called energy star models...if anyone doubts this, look at the rating plate!
