My neighbor is looking for a heat-pump window unit to put in his attic room he finished off. He's going to make the attic sort of a "kids" room, with one side a bedroom, and the other a playroom. He doesn't want to buy just some big-box store clunker made in China, so he's looking for a Carrier, as they are basically the king of AC industry. Carrier's web page shows they have a complete line of window and all unit heat pump and AC units, but we can't for the life of us find anyone that sells 'em. He's also tried to find some other better-quality made units, like Friedrich, but has been unsuccessful (I remember when I was in school, the county bought hundreds of Friedrich window unit heat pumps to air condition all the campus-style outdoor schools here...most are still going strong 20 years later!)

We don't have too many small-time hardware stores in the area, and the local appliance shops are all doing the same big box junkers like LG and Haier. The only one that we could find that were worth anything were Whirlpool, and the Sears Kenmore brands (the same beast) but they weren't avaliable as a heat-pump.

Does anyone know if the window units by Carrier are actually Genuine United-Technologies built units, with Copeland compressors, just like their installed systems are? I mean, if they are just re-labled 3rd world asian junk, there's no sense in looking any further!

I suspect the only place you're going to find Carrier or Friedrich is at a heating/plumbing contractor. HD here used to sell Friedrich up until 2 years ago, then Maytag, now it's all Haier or Danby or no-name stuff everywhere because they're alot less expensive.

Friedrich

Buy the Friedrich, no matter what it takes to find it! Not only will it outlast anything else, it will operate with far less vibration and noise! Forget Home Depot and Lowes, go to a professional shop. Their staff know what they are selling and they tend to stand behind their products better anyway. Warranties don't really matter much in this case because you should get the one which will last, not the one that can be returned and exchanged over and over again (AC units are HEAVY, it's easiest to move them only once).

Also, being made in the USA is nice, but my reason for this brand loyalty is because their products are genuinely BETTER than the competition, no matter where it is made.

Get it right the first time, buy Friedrich!
Dave
