Noticed this morning after booting up computer little Windows update icon was on my toolbar indicating another update was ready to install.

Didn't think much of it, and before leaving turned off computer which allowed the update to install. Turning it on a few minutes ago was greeted by installation of Windows Edge!

Switched over to Opera for browser sometime ago as was sick of those annoying messages from websites about no longer supporting IE. Don't have time right now to configure or play around with Edge, so can anyone shed some thoughts?

Opera has been playing up lately, so am in a way glad to have a second choice. Don't like Chrome because hate Google and how it gets their hooks into all parts of your computer just to use their browser.

Microsoft has abandoned the original incarnation of Edge. The newest version is completely revamped based on Chrome.  Windows 7 has been officially dropped from support for months, as we know, and has never involved Edge but MS is pushing Edge to Win7 so someone somewhere seems desperate to get the new Chrome-Edge out into the world.

I'm ignoring it on all my Win7 machines.  I use only Firefox anyway.

Opera is based on Chrome too, so I'm not sure how much google you are avoiding when using Opera?
I used to love Opera browser, but that was back when Opera was its own unique product, not a fresh face on Chrome.

I stick with Firefox, but generally have Opera installed too so I have a fallback if I have trouble with a particular website, though I can't remember the last time switching to Opera ever fixed a problem I was having with Firefox. At least it helps eliminate browser as the cause of an issue.

I've been having trouble with Paypal not working in Ebay, read lots on the net about trying another browser to fix the issue but it was no help for me.

I use Linux computers most of the time so don't touch Edge. I now have my late father's windows 10 computer but rarely use it on windows, I tend to use Solus Linux booting off a USB stick in the windows 'puter.

I did use it on windows 10 for a few weeks but found windows to be troublesome and intrusive, just like Launderess found with swapping to Edge without asking permission. Whose damn computer is it anyway, Mr. Gates?

I mostly use Firefox (latest ver) for 95% of stuff. Sometimes I use Chrome for video streaming.

Never tried Opera (that I can recall).

Tried Brave! for a while but got tired of it because so many web sites don't like it. And I didn't like how it stores bookmarks completely separate and different than Firefox.

Edge? Meh.

Had one bothered to look

Would have seen what today's update was for, and could simply have declined to have it installed.

Since so many websites won't even allow IE, and or those that do post dire warnings about using an "out dated" browser am not that worried yet about the upgrade.

IE is dead or at least gasping last breaths; better off getting shot of it now for free even if it is another Windows product.

Won't be upgrading this computer to Windows 10, but rather will wait until circumstances force purchase of new. Then Windows 10 or whatever Bill Gates has as OS de jour will be already installed.

Yes, have heard upgrading to Windows ten is painless, but have seen too many fingers burned.

Oh what problems edge has caused

I clicked on the upgrade to edge last week. Oh the problems I have had with it. It cleaned out all my extra utilities that I used all the time. My separate virus protection Sophos, google chrome that I had set up for u-tube and many more with no way of replacing them. I had to go through the updates and remove them one at a time which took hours, then having to contact various other programs to reinstall without previous versions so all info was lost. Just to say I hate Microsoft and all that they do. Stay away from it at all cost. Now maybe with a new computer set up it may work better but I doubt it. It slowed down my computer so bad. I believe it is because it seems to be recording every keystroke that you do and every site you visit is stored in memory with no removal so your system get overloaded and everything is available to hackers. They just "suck", there is no better way of saying it.

Firefox and Safari are the new standard-bearers in the realm of online privacy. Especially as the long and drawn-out death of Flash is finally coming to a close, Chrome is no longer a great option for the majority of users given its bloated nature and Google's widespread tracking.

Edge, like Opera, is Chromium based and you may find it works just fine for you. However, I would strongly recommend Firefox--the Mozilla foundation is not interested in your personal data and promotes open, secure software. Firefox is also known for stability over time and doesn't tend to shake things up just for fun every few releases.

Windows is the subject of this thread but I'll throw in that Safari and Firefox are equally good options on a Mac. Firefox is also available on iOS and Android, so you can have your tabs and bookmarks available everywhere if you desire.

I've been using Firefox as my primary browser since it was in the 0.x versions.

An irritation with it happened when the engine platform changed and older plugins and addons were no longer supported, developers had to rewrite them.  Two particular favorites were not ported over.  One of them, ReminderFox, continued to work for a while with Thunderbird (Mozilla's e-mail client) but Thunderbird was also updated.  It was easy enough to export the data from ReminderFox and import it into the Thunderbird's native calendar app.

It seems to me that they've gotten sloppy and cavalier about doing these updates and changing things that they don't mention will be changed.

It's happening across all platforms and devices.  Even my uber-tech savvy FWB is having sh*t happen on his android phones that he has no idea how any of it did.

IMO, this is all because the under 35 segment of the population just doesn't care about security, privacy, or sloppiness whether they're the end user or on the IT team at one of these intrusive entities.

Edge has always been included with Windows 10.

Win10 also has IE, assuming new systems now still include it.  It may be hidden, not on the desktop or program menus.  Can be found by searching for "iexplore.exe"

FYI

The CEO of Microsoft is Satya Nadella

I think Bill Gates has devoted all of his time to his foundation for many years now and has nothing to do with what is going on with the Windows platform. This probably explains why every Windows update breaks something on the computer requiring further updates to fix what the prior update has broken. Their entire development process of creating updates needs to be junked and rethought.
