Does anyone here enjoy listening to vinyl records? I do. I have a modest collection of turntables—some new, some vintage—and I enjoy switching them around periodically. I wouldn’t consider myself an audiophile, but I love playing vinyl and buy new and old recordings in that format whenever I can. Anyone else? Tell us about it.

Thanks.

I love vinyl.

Vinyl records are so much more tactile than CDs or MP3s.

I also have a certain love and respect for music. The enjoyment of music should be an occasion, and music should be the focus of attention. If it takes a little work, and requires a special effort and a bit of a ritual, so much the better.

For music to be cheap, easy background noise to help avoid experiencing the real world around you is wrong on several levels.

Enough preaching. Play some records and enjoy the music.

Not only do I collect vinyl

I collect the things to play them on. I must have over 1000 albums, 5 console record players, several table models, one reference system, piles of 45s and 78s. Even though I have about 160 CDs, my players are crotchety, and CDs decide to skip on their own, no matter how well cared for they are. If you are so inclined, sneak over to VacuumLand and see arh1953s thread about collecting record albums. There are pictures of a sort, of some of the things I have, and some of the other members albums too. My records range from lounge to classical, rock and roll to latin. All conditions.

I have the remains of what was once a magnificent vinyl collection. There are probably 400 albums and around 150 singles on shelves in my garage. I've transferred some of the albums that aren't available on CD to my iPod. I'll admit I don't often play vinyl, anymore. My iPod has completely spoiled me in the convenience department. Of course the sound isn't as good as pristine vinyl, but it's just so nice to have 970 albums on something smaller than a deck of cards.

Frontaloadotmy!

For starters, here is a mid '60s Zenith "Circle of Sound" player with the exclusive "Micro Touch 2 gram tonearm". It is one of two of this model I have, both with speakers, I have two with receivers, one is missing its speakers. I also have a mod white w/blue grill cloth Zenith Allegro tabletop set. That just scratches the surface. BTW, Micro Touch tracks beautifully.

I've got an RCA 45 RPM only record player, not sure of year, but I think it was around 1949 or so. RCA was the first company to come up with the 45.......and a player to play them on. (They deducted 33 from 78 and came up with 45). I also have a 1968 Magnavox entertainment console....turntable, color tv and amp all in one that still works. My collection of albums and 45s includes 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s music.

We have a Motorola console stereo from the 60's (cabinet by Drexel!) and a Grundig from the 50's, although the Grundig is a tad unwell: The input selector buttons aren't making contact very well, so you have to push them in and hold them if you want full volume on anything other than the turntable.

As far as records go, I have a million of them, but I mostly buy them for the cover art: I have a special fondness for the demonstration albums put out by the stereo manufactuers, and albums released to promote products (like the one that I have that was put out to promote the lady's electric shaver by Norelco or Sunbeam or somebody)

I have several copies of both "The Grand Canyon Suite" because the artwork of the Grand Canyon on the covers is so cool. The same with "Rhapsody in Blue", because the covers have great shots of New York in the 50's & 60's.

And of course, who could forget the Statler Hotel Orchestra? ;-)

My Fave Brand of Mid 20th Century

Record Player. This particular model was the very first one
I ever clapped my eyes on that moved by itself. It was only a
matter of time before I would participate in AW.O !!!

frontaloadotmy that's cool. I have a CD player that looks something like that. It has a glass front and there's a lift on the botton and the cds go in and out up and down like a toaster.

Scott, YES! You can still get carts and needles, and have the idlers rebuilt. You can definitely keep them spinning.

63, yep, that's the updated turntable on yours. I need to do some finishing up on mine. I need to fix the springs on my turntable because it's not level (kinda leaned back from sitting upright for so many years). Need new speakers and possibly a new cartridge, but otherwise, it's still a great sounding machine. Very warm and full sounding for a "portable" (try lugging this thing around).
