1965 Magnavox

I think I remember that this one has the extra powerful (300 watt?) amplifier. I bet the sound is just phenomenal.

I am a Magnavox FREAK but won't bore you with all the details yet, just think, this was sold in Fort Wayne-home of Magnavox from 1930 to about 1975. I "adopted" Fort Wayne for this very reason. My stories and questions to Yahoo's "Magnavoxfriends" site went and go largely ignored. I get better feedback here. Rickr, somewhere in this house, I have a color booklet and a sepia fold out with your set and my Italian Provincial Magnavox "Sorrento" in it. I'd bet yours is the French Provincial model of mine. I have 15 inch woofers, horn tweeters, 100 watt Astro Sonic amp, (needs recapping, badly) and solid wood cabinet, before they put out the moulded carvings and panels. I have a '57 hi-fi console, a '59 stereo console, a green '69 Early American "200" and a walnut '69 "chairside". Please show us more when you can!

BTW: Back in the day, almost everyone in Fort Wayne had a family member that worked at Magnavox. They even had an employee store in Fort Wayne, where the Magnavox employee's got a 40% discount. Needless to say, there were (and still are) lots of Magnovox products around here. I could always tell a Magnavox console stereo at someones house, because of the sliding top panels. Magnavox was noted for their fine quality wood cabinets, along with their sound quality.

The original building on Bueter Road is still in use. I cannot recall what is in there now, but the huge original limestone panel in the red brick building is still there. Above the front doors MAGNAVOX is spelled out in huge letters, in the original old style font.

Finally, contact with Fort Wayne! I'm sure there are still a lot of good feelings about The Magnavox Company. I bought a Fort Wayne book that only had sketchy information about it, but it did have some info about the Wolf & Dessaur fire on 2-10-62. Is that company even still in business? If I ever got a chance, I'd love to see the stuff up there. I try to buy these things locally, once in a while, a decent console will show up. Portable radios and record players are nil. There is a man on Orange Avenue here in Fort Pierce, who has a closed up shop full of Magnavox consoles. They may be ruined, he never re-opened after the last hurricane.

Bruce, this is a very cool thread you started and guys you have some awesome units. I have a Dual similar to yours, its a 1214 changer. Ortofon cartridge. It gets a tube phono preamp then goes into my 1959 GE classic tube stereo.

This one must be from the early 1950's. It does have AM/FM radio, and this mutha kicks out the bass!

Collaro record changer

This was purchased at a trift store for $60.00 about 5 years ago. It had a plastic POS BSR record changer in it. I installed this early Micromatic by Collaro in it. (someone said this would have had a Webcor (sp?) in it when it was built) I replace the hard as rock rubber turntable mat with felt, to give it a vintage look like the early 50's flocked turntables used to have.

I think I have that set pictured in my 1955 brochure. I think it may have had a Webcor originally. '56 or '57 was the first Collaro. My '57 has a Collaro. A '51 Mag "Belvedere" I want has a low grade '60s VM in leiu of its Webcor. Neither of my tube Mags are that neat.

Here's all I have at the moment--my little Delmonico "Stereo" consolette. Not sure how stereo it is, since the speakers are only about 6" apart!

I had one EXACTLY like that when I was in 3rd grade. It was old then - used. I think that's about a 1968 model.

Love the Silver tone too. Is that about a '57 or '58 model?

Those both appear to be in good working order - is that right?

Any old consoles are neat items. I saw a '50s Silvertone hi fi around the corner, I think young people were cleaning out an estate. They tried to sell it for days, but instead of giving it to Goodwill, they tossed it to the curb. I could not take it myself, unfortunately. Nice color console, Veg-o.
