I, too, have been known to play vinyl the manual way. It's hard to get a good shot of my studios, but here's one view.

The cabinet in the lower left corner holds two shelves of the 12" records, and there's another shelf directly above it, mounted on the ceiling.

General Electric Custom Decorator 1963

Here is my GE Custom Decorator. The speakers hang on the sides and play off the hinges, or separate with the wires exiting from the back. You can't add tape, but you can add Porta-Fi. It is a wireless broadcaster that is received through a speaker or speakers you plug into your electric outlets. Fits on a table, in a bookcase, or on the wall, even had screw on legs. It is a 19 inch black and white "Black Daylight" screen.

Kevin's Studio Suite

Yup. I worked in radio longer ago than I'm willing to admit. It's no way to earn a living, but it's a lot of fun. So, when I bought a house with a large room downstairs (12' X 27'), I divided it into two studios, and installed the equipment that I've been collecting over the years.

The turntables are 'Sparta' brand, but it's the same TT sold by QRK, Russco, and others. I have Micro-Trak plywood tonearms installed on them.

The R-R machines are Crown 800-series half-track. I have a pair of 700-series in the other studio.

Also shown: a McCurdy Stereo mixing console with two mix busses, Sony three-head cassette decks, Sony CD players (bleah -- new technology!), and Gates/ATC Cart machines.

All of it feeds through my house with line-level, and in the studio there are a pair of Eico Mono tube amps and a pair of EV Sentry studio monitors.

I've never had the werewithal to set up a transmitter or a webcasting service.

As much as I love vintage everything from soup to nuts I think CD's were a godsend. Why? Because first and foremost I just couldn't bare to spend money on albums, some of them pricey classical sets way back when and then hear the odd cracks and pops that always eventually turn up sooner or later. I was super careful with them, had my good JVC quartz lock turntable and Stanton EE cartridge, a pricey JVC Super A receiver, super expensive handmade J Mercer speakers but inevitably after a few plays,,,pop, crackle and it would drive me insane. I was so relieved when CD's came out. I bought CD copies of some of my albums and the difference in quality was startling I think.

for the specifics of your setup. I love the way you have your TT's supported with the chains attached to the wall. I'm sure that reduces unwanted vibration. As for all the other professional equipment you could operate your own personal radio station! Very cool!

Also 63getelevision; great vintage GE Custom Decorator! I'll be snapping some pictures of my Magnavox TT's for you! I'm sure you can tell me the year they were manufactured just by the look!

Hi Mike! I had a GE unit without the TV for a while, tubes and the Custom changer like my unit now has. I'll never know why I got rid of it. I made one bid (and only one) on a Magnavox portable stereo radio-phono, overpriced at $100.00, and already have a walnut veneer upscale Mag TT radio-phono. Love to see yours! I also collect Magnavox "modular" systems.

How do you know what the model number is? Sort of looks similar,
but all I can see underneath the lid is Columbia and Viva-tonal.

Hi Goprog, I found a Victrola yesterday in one of our antique malls. It's $450.00. My sister-in-law has some tall phono, possibly a Victrola, I've never looked in it, always forgot as fast as I saw it. I do like them, though.

That's a model 810. It was the top of the line acoustic machine in 1927.

You won't find a model number because it was a decal and it became lost when somebody 'refinished' the machine.

It looks nothing like it did when it was new.

I have one with original finish yet.

It MAY be the model 610 which is slightly smaller.

I have some viva-tonal sleeves around here and a 2 page ad for them also which shows the models and will try to be more positive later.

It's a nice player. How does it sound?

The Future?

Check this video out. This guy has done renderings of a record player that can be installed into a 5.25" bay of a computer. The player itself slides out and it uses a clamping mechanism and a short tonearm to play the records, kinda like a "Mister Disc". I know this isn't as hi-fi as a traditional turntable but it looks like fun and interesting to say the least. I for one will buy it if it ever comes to market. I did reply and say at least give the tonearm a P-mount so I can mount a good Ortofon pickup in it for better sound instead of using a scritchy sounding Chinese cartridge. Neat idea to import beats into the computer or just to listen or convert to mp3 (why would you want to do that anyway).
