Anyone know how to remove yellow staining on dishwasher racks?

Hi everyone. I just bought a new upper rack for my dishwasher I’ve always wanted the tiered upper rack and I finally got one today, but it has some yellow staining going on. Does anyone know what would remove the yellowing? Also, my feed tube that goes to the roof jet is sorta yellowed and the spinner for the roof jet is completely yellow. The water I have currently is soft and is actually a very nice quality city water, no high iron or anything so all that yellowing is from previous locations the dishwasher was used at.

I’m not sure if anyone else can tell but I can in person, the cup shelf is completely bright white and so is the spray arm but the rack especially in the middle is a bit yellowed in comparison.

Meant to add: This rack is used of course. Scrubbing didn’t help with any of the stains. But the rack is just covered in soap scum, especially the wash arm assembly which I took apart and hand washed and running a cleaning cycle now to help remove all that scum. It’s crazy how nasty people let their dishwashers get!

A few years ago, I'd tell you to get some detergent that contains bleach (Cascade Fryer Boilout or one of their liquid detergents that contains bleach). None of those are an option now so put 1 cup of bleach in the tub on the main wash cycle and let it go to town. Select the longest wash time with heat if that's an option.

Removing yellow stains possible iron from a dishwasher

First you need to see what type of stain it is if it’s iron, you do not want to use any chlorine. It will set it permanently. Also, you should never use more than an eighth of a cup of chlorine bleach in a dishwasher using a cup of bleach could destroy the main seal and any other rubber parts.

I would try iron out or another iron removing product and see if that does anything, in any case it will probably go away after you’ve used the dishwasher 50 to 100 times.

Dishwasher cleaners are good for getting the mineral deposits off of course there’s no such thing as soap scum to start with you don’t even use soap in a dishwasher lol

It depends on what has caused the discolouration.  In addition to what's already been mentioned above, if it's due to tomato causing red/orange stains, the way to remove it is with benzoyl peroxide.  Add a tablespoon or two without detergent.  This was the active ingredient in Cascade Plastic Booster before it was discontinued.  This works great in the dishwasher to remove tomato stains from plastic containers, cutting boards and the dishwasher's plastic surfaces.

Thank you so much. I don’t have any idea what it’s from, to me it seems like it could of been from food but at the same time it could also be from a rusty machine this rack was in, so I’ll try iron out first and if that doesn’t work I’ll try that. And by the way there are zero rusty spots on this rack, but I will cap all the prongs off soon to prevent that in the future. Thanks much!!

I have determined it is from rusting tines. There are small specks of rust that started on the tip of each prong of the middle of the rack, I will cap them all off thruout the entirety of both racks and run an iron out wash cycle.

I did try the above recommendation and that completely eliminated a few orange spots I had on the door! So thanks again for that.
