I recall a 1970-era jingle about "the meaner, greener, green dot Swirl" and I think it was a short lived laundry detergent. When I heard the jingle at the time, I seem to recall it was a new product that I'd never heard of before...but then again, in my mom's pantry/laundry room, anything other than Tide was a "new product".

Does Swirl ring a bell with anyone else? I can't anything about it on Google.

I don't recall it being a 1970's product -and I think it was spelled "Swerl". I also don't recall it being available in the Northeast - the only reason I know of it is because it was listed in the "Use and Care" manual for my friend's mother's 1961 Philco "Miss America" - in the section that discussed water hardness, detergents vs. soaps, and recommended amounts. All brands were listed and the only other one I didn't recognize was "American Family Detergent", which I believe was a P&G product.

It was also listed in my aunt's 1969 GE Filter Flo user manual so it was apparently around a while. Since those manuals were printed nationally, it is conceivable that a particular regional brand wasn't available in our area.

American Family Detergent was a Chicago-only product from P&G which was a premium-coupon product...you collected coupons from American Family products and turned them in at redemption centers (like trading stamps). They stopped mfg in the late 60s...at the end they also had a liquid dish detergent as well.
