This is going to sound really odd but, here goes.

For some odd reason for the last week my house smells like bleach.
I use it in the laundry of course but, this smell is mostly on the main level of the house. Mainly in the living room and the dining room. I haven't cleaned in there with bleach and I haven't washed anything in there with bleach! I have went as far as pulling out the furnace filter and smelling it! I haven't used a floor cleaner besides the norm.
Even my non-smelling husband can smell it.
Can a plant give off a bleach smell? ( yeah, I know it sound stupid but, I'm grasping here!)
Any idea's?

Stumped

Neighbors' pool odor coming in through open window?

Has your tap water been more heavily chlorinated of late?
I was going to say the smell of it may be lingering on your towels or in your clothing, but living /dining rooms? *HUH*?

This leads me to ask (HELLLOOOOO Launderess.....) is there something chemically related/similar to bleach that would have a similar odor involved?

Could the main sewer line in the basement be cracked and or plugged and bleachy water is weeping up through the concrete? Does the main sewer line or the connector line for the laundry to the main sewer go under the living room?

Steve: Not the neighbor's pool. Water hasn't changed.

Lawrence: I'm almost afraid to ask but, what's " it"?

Philip: The main drain was moved and replaces last year, ( tight as a frog's butt). There is a full basement. We switched the old sump pump to a enclosed unit a couple of years ago.
Plus, I don't smell any bleach down there at all.

Have any ideas Launderess?

Bleach Smell

Hello Bethann,
I don't know your living arrangements but if you live in an apartment perhaps your upstairs neighbour has spilled some bleach and it has penetrated the floor. If you live in a house have you any bleach stored in your attic which may have leaked?

I don't know what else to suggest.

David

bleach smell

Do you have any kind of electrostatic air cleaner or ionizer? Sometimes the ozone given off by one of those can smell a bit like bleach......

another possibility....

It could be a poltergeist. Sometimes manifested by a strong smell. <p> - Milwaukee - The Rave - Eagles Club - ...security doing a sweep of the building at closing time, have felt the strong urge to leave by a presence and feeling of coldness that is overwhelming, also accompanied by a strong odor of starch or bleach smell.

Maytagbear I was going to suggest the "it" smell as well. Bethann men only have that "smell" with 1 thing and 1 thing only. Oh whats running thru my mind right now aint right....

As a young teenager I remember my mother had the bleach smell about her and I thought "NO NO NO - it can't be the smell if 'IT' on her". It wasn't, it was bleach - she had just washed the floor. Almost damaged me for life!

ah there it is- the waste-paper basket in the living room wi

According to demonologists, (I read this in the prologue and epilogue of the Amityville Horror)you'd feel cold as the appartition sucked heat energy out of the room to be able to manifest a quasi-physical form. Demons can also animate statues and plush toys /stuffed animals!

Ghosts literally smell like excrement, if they are truly evil.
G-d's army tends to smell like roses.
Let's face it, you probably have the ghost of a laundry enthusiast that has crossed-over visiting!
Do you ever hear "phosphates" as the wind blows through your windows?

Do your animals react as if there is a person/spirit there?

Is there a new material in (or near)the room outgassing?New "hardwood" laminate floors? New curains, new rugs, new furniture, new windows, new siding on the house?
Is there an air-freshener that is mis-behaving?
AHHHHHH! Is there a beastie that died in the walls?
Did you check the attic for bird's nests? Their droppings alone is nasty.

anti-fungals

The stuff we use against mold and mildew here in Germany often has a chlorine basis.
I once used a cat litter which produced a similar smell, my cats tried it once and refused to ever use it again. Don't blame them.
You can get various tests from Home Depot or Lowe's. Maybe one of them could pinpoint what is going on.
I personally do not think semen smells like chlorine, but since so many folks think so, perhaps a dog or a cat?
What else smells like chlorine? Do you have natural gas or propane in your house or area? I know that sounds silly, but am thinking of that horrid explosion in NYC recently...lots of folks thought the smell was paint, not gas.

Well...

Still can't figure it out. Nothing has changed in either room.

Like Toggle said, It's probably a damn spirit . LOL! As long as they mind their manners, who gives a shit. There is plenty enough room for everyone.

Don;t be shocked if you see one!

Back in the early 80's I actually had an encounter with a spirit or ghost. I call it that because I had no other explanation for it.
I had taken this girl out on a date. Later that night when I dropped her off, she asked if I would like to come in for some coffee. So I did. When we got inside her apartment, it was dark. She said to stay at the door while she turned the lights on so I don't trip over the furniture. Well she heads off to the back of the apartment and the bathroom door opens. The light in the bathroom was still on. A guy in a white T-Shirt, blue jeans and a red baseball cap comes out of the bathroom walking towards my date. Since the bathroom light was on I could readily see the furniture layout in the rather dim light.
I said "hello" to this guy, he turns and looks at me with kind of a shocked look on his face, stands there for a second or two and turns around and opens a door next to the refrigerator and goes out closing it behind him. At about the same moment my date turns on the apartment light. I asked her who that guy was. She said there wasn't any guy. I said yes there was, I saw him. She asked where he went. I pointed to the door and said "he went thru that door". She opened the door and it was her pantry! No other windows or doors in there. I told her I saw him in the light from the bathroom. We looked and the bathroom light was off.
This guy looked as real as anyone you would see on a street. Nothing ghostly about it. It really creeped me out. But at the moment it didn't bother me because it wasn't scary at all.
Several years later I had the opportunity to talk to a psychic
and I told her this story. She said it was most likely a ghost and it was probably there for this gal I dated and that I most likely interrupted its "mission". She said if the ghost didn't say anything to me, don't worry about it. She also mentioned that I may be "sensitive" and that I may see more in the future!
I don't bring this story up often, but maybe you have something to look forward to in YOUR apt!

Well Alan if I hadn't seen a "ghost" myself I would say you are full of it but I have and it was as real as can be. Not a drink or drug induced hallucination. It was right there, in my apartment and left thru the curtains leading out to the 20th floor balcony. Wasn't scary, I found it fascinating.

As the physic I spoke with said that due to the contemporary nature of the clothing of whatever it was I saw may have been "recently departed". She also said that apparitions can take on many different forms. It's all in how "they" want you to see them.

This was the only time I had seen anything like that. Shortly thereafter the date I had accepted a job in ABQ and moved there. So I never had a chance to visit her apartment again, nor did we discuss this incident as she thought I was nuts.
