i have a "new" maytag model 32 wringer washer. after replacing the electric cord it all works except that it makes this awfull sqeeking in time with the agitator. so....does anyone have any experience taking one of these apart and can give me some pointers?

It's called the center plate. Probably not available anymore.

Not sure about a model 32, but all the Maytag wringers I've ever worked on come apart like this. Pull the agitator off, and you'll see a lot of bolts underneath it. Remove the bolts, and then the tub comes out. I think there are a couple of bolts you remove to remove the center plate from the gearcase. Pretty simple to deal with.

Type of tranny oil and how-to check the level

OK panel of experts: i have a Cheiftain that needs some tranny "erl" and no clue what kind to use. Motor oil? Gear lube? Tranny fluid? Magic Marvels Mystery Mix? And the next question is how do you know when its at the right level (and puking oil out the wringerhead is not an option, sorry!:-) Somebody has to know, i just don't wanna run the bugger too low or on an oil type that's not chemically kopasetic with the original stuff in there.

Danke, danke one and all for your suggestions!
