expiration dates

I cannot speak for the expiry dates on freeze dried stuff, but I do know that expiry dates on canned foods are VERY conservative.

BYU (LOL!) research has found that stuff is good for waaaayyyy longer than the 2 years on the tin. Of course, it might not be as appealing as it gets older, but it beats the alternative of being hungry.

As for the LDS folks prepping for disaster, EVERYONE in the USA could take a leaf from their book. Most folks have a 3 hour supply of essentials. How many people die trying to drive to a supermarket in a snowstorm?

But, what do I know? I'm simply someone who doesn't want to be at the mercy of circumstances - or at least, as little as possible.

Cedar Rapids

The flood of 2008 was something else.

Thankfully, civil engineers developed a levy system in Waterloo during the 60's and 70's, in response to the flood of '61. While Waterloo did flood in '08 it was nowhere near as devistating than Cedar Rapids.

I just happen to be in CR this past weekend. On the surface you'd never know the entire river basin portion of downtown took on 10+ feet of water. People were out, traffic was busy and shops were open. When you started to look closer you would notice the commercial business that was destroyed in June of 2008 has not returned. I saw more vacant commercial buildings than I was expecting and I don't anticipate leases to be taken out for those properties anytime soon. A shame really, their downtown has a nice urban feel to it, much more so than Waterloo.

To this day city officials are fighting with the state and the feds to come up with the funds to build the necessary flood protection that should have been built decades ago (see note above about Waterloo).

I hope they come to terms and proceed by protecting both sides of the river, as there has been talk to only build a levy on the north side.
