Appliance Colours You Wish Would Come Back, And Those You Hope Never Do.

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I despise, loath, abhor, and abominate

ALMOND/Bisque.

Hate it, hate it, hate it, and did I say I hated it?

The stove and fridge of the landlord's are both Almond. I think I might like them better if they were in White.

My washer, dryer, and portable dishwasher are in White, and they look so nice compared to the Almond.

We always had White appliances, and as a kid, I wasn't happy about that, but now, I appreciate White.

I would like to see a Medium Rose pink, and definetely a return to Poppy.

I do like the Hettie and dryer in Sedona (to me, it is a Medium Bronze, but...)

Avocado....the coin-op GE laundry in the Residence Halls at college were Avocado, and I never liked them. 5 washers and 5 dryers just tended to gloom down a room. Plus, I never felt my clothes were as clean as when I could wash them at home in my White Center Dial Maytag.

Copper...it all depends. I think Maytag did it best.

Almond overdose

Almond was an extremely popular color. It had a long run of about 20 years. Almond coordinated very well with oak wood trim/stains etc.

Eventually, a refreshed lighter shade was introduced called "Bisque". I don't believe the name was coined by Whirlpool. There are design authorities and other opinion leaders that come up with this stuff. This color was also coordinated with plumbing fixtures, Corian-solid surface countertops, tilemakers, small appliances etc. Since almond had more or less run its course, Bisque was not nearly as popular and is pretty much over with. However, there still is some demand.

In connection with textured steel, the claimed advantages cited nearly 35 years ago when introduced, were fewer noticeable fingerprints etc. Also, minor scratches and chips can be very successfully touched-up. That said, just like anything else it still requires regular cleaning to stay fresh.

LMB you reminded me that my first ever experience with a center dial type Maytag was in the dorm laundry room at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo back in the mid 70's. The machines were avocado BOL models and didn't have center dials since they were coin operated.

No question in my mind that Maytag was the way to go back then--and up until Whirlpool stepped in--for machines that would be used and abused by college kids. I'm sure those machines were changed out long ago, but I'm also sure that unless they went with newer versions of the classic Maytag mechanics, they have never had a more reliable fleet of machines since.

For modern appliances, I like black, actually. A mixture of some all black and some white with black panels works nicely.

For vintage, I always thought the Fridigaire red was so cool.

FEH!

"Almond was an extremely popular color. It had a long run of about 20 years. Almond coordinated very well with oak wood trim/stains etc.

What I'm trying to say here is- whether Almond or Bisque, the colour was deliberately designed (by the very colour consultants you mention) to be the colour of a White appliance that hadn't been cleaned for a long time. Ick!

I may be the only one who wishes that avocado, harvest gold, and GE's version of shaded coppertone were still available. Those are the colors that I grew up with, man. GROOVY!!!

Frigidaire's Charcoal or that wonderful Cafe au Lait color they had. Also the pale green---I forget what Frigidaire called it. Oh, and of course,(an Ultra-Clean in) Sunny Yellow.
Maytag's shade of Turquoise.
GE's Dark Blue.

I agree, Greg. All of those wonderful pastels - sure wish they would come back. They added just enough warmth and brightness to the kitchen without overwhelming it.
The only 70's color I would want to see is of course Poppy - that is really handsome.

When we moved to Connecticut in 1966, my parents went with coppertone refrigerator and stove (we did not get a dishwasher until the 70's) and it was incredibly dark.

Turquoise is my all time favorite appliance color. Poppy and Cadet Blue are close seconds. Frigidaire's light green (I forget was it was called) is also very nice.

My parents had an avocado and white kitchen, so avocado reminds me of home.

One of my aunts had a pink kitchen. It's not one of my favorite colors. Another aunt had a coppertone kitchen. I thought that it was very dark.

I have a friend who has a black and white kitchen, it's very modern looking but I can never quite decide if I like black appliances.

Stainless steel, which seems to be the current color of choice among some of my family and friends seems a bit too high maintenance for me.

This is a very intresting thread.. Appliance colors i don't like:
Black
Staniless Steel (not relly a color)
Poppy (ok shoot me now, but theres a story behind why.. it involves bad memories of my dad taking me to the bar as a 4 year old and leaving me behind it with the then red (now i know what they where) appliances..)
Did i say black?
Not found of Turqouise
Whites to drab
Black, its ugly
There are a few other colors but i don't recall them (one was the horrible color all over this little old ladys appliances as a kid and it was a very rosy color that reminded me of thousand island dressing)

Anybody remember "Toast" and "Platinum"? I don't know if anyone besides Sears and Whirlpool did those. They didn't seem to last long, though looking back now, "toast" was probably very similar to that medium brown Frigidaire and GE had in the 60s. And btw, "Bisque" is a different animal than "Almond". It's lighter, more of an I wouldn't mind see any of them from the 50s - 70s come back, except for harvest gold. Avocado green and coppertone I can even do again now, but not harvest gold.

Sunny yellow would be fun to have a kitchen/laundry done in. That seems to have been the least seen of the yellow-pink-turquoise era, and I really liked that. It of course is a completely different animal than harvest gold.

Mint green is my fav!

I like the mint green the best. The colour I like the least is the harvest gold of the 1970's. I do not care for the shading. Have seen pixs of the later harvest Maytags without the shading and they do not look too bad. They look more like a plain yellow without the shading. Don't know why I dislike the shading so much. I just cannot stand it. I kind of like the rich chocolate brown colour that GE had without the shading, but the lighter coppertone with the shading,I didn't like at all.

For me: mint green, turquoise, pink, bright yellow, and the GE chocolate brown are my favourites in order.

I like the late '50s/early '60s pastels, too. Your mint green KM is a customized color, isn't it, Rick? It's beautiful!

Second choice: Frigidaire poppy red.

And call me old fashioned ("You're old-fashioned!!"), but I like white appliances, too.

Next to almond, that was supposed to say more of an off white.

I think the pale green is really pretty too, but I like sunny yellow better than the other yellow color Frigidaire had at the same time they had the green, I forget the name of it.

Hi Eugene!Thank you!
Yes, it was a custom mix. My automotive painter friend duplicated it for me. The colour was copied from a 1957 Frigidaire washer that I now own. I forgot the Frigidaire name for the colour. Shearwood Green I think???? I know that GE used the mint green also.

BTW: you are right on with the white! Just add some nice chrome trim, and you have a classic look. Just see how nice a centre dial Maytag looks when it is shined up.

Thanks Lawrence! I knew someone here would come up with the correct name. Mayfair Pink??? Daaang, sound too much like Maytag pink! LOL!!

I have a Sherwood Green Tower Top washer and a Mayfair Pink Tower Top dryer. <:
Will take pixs and post when I have a chance to.

Hi Scotty! <:

Gnight all!

color

I think the one color I could live without would have to be beige, or almond, or whatever that off-white color is. BLAHHH!!!

But on the other hand I have to say I am a closet avocado fan. It's a color that I like for appliance for some reason, yet I wouldn't want anyone over at my house where they could see it.

I was always attracted to Brown too. The colors of my childhood I suppose. :-)
