At my church, our refrigerator . It's a 1977 Whirlpool Limited Edition 20 cu ft, and the door gasket is shot. The door shelf is missing, and it's in otherwise perfect shape. We also have a '77 P7 GE range with a missing knob and a dead timer, and I figured that if I could find a graveyard, I could get all that stuff all at once rather cheaply. Does any such place exist?

You might try acquainting yourself with a local independent appliance dealer to see if you can get access to the trade-ins they intend to junk.

It does seem strange that there aren't junk yards for appliances like there are for cars. It's the same principle, keeping what you have in operating condition and providing an ecological alternative to buying new.

I agree 100%--as, I'm sure, would many more here. Problem is--there is that strong movement to sell people new appliances because they'll be more efficient. "Why even replace that standard light bulb inside the fridge, when you can replace the whole thing, and save power!"

Of course, these people conveniently overlook the problem that the new appliance will probably last 5 years or less, thus merely shifting environmental impact from electricity to run the appliance to the energy/resources needed to make appliances.

That's exactly what I thought. I go to the salvage yard for my car all the time. I think I will try to make it to Lexington and see if I can't talk to someone about the castoffs. Thanks!

Sadly at both appliance and car "graveyards" the victims are no longer "interned" there-but crushed or shredded, dismantled to get usable parts or materials.SSI shredders for the shredding-and Marathon Products for the Krushing or baling.Look up Marathon Baler on the web and their website does show some sad scenes(for the appliances)going thru a Galaxy model baler-this beast can be equipped with hydraulic power packages from 30Hp-on up to 2 100Hp motors. The Baler has a shear ram-a shear knife on the ram face and another on the breaker bar above the ram-in the video its impressive to see this cut a fridge-and DD washer in half!So with equipments like these the machines can be processed at the spot as the place receives them.Same sort of thing with the SSI shredder-on their website they show many videos of appliances being processed with their shredders. This does make it DIFFICULT for appliance fans such as US that want to salvage parts from a graveyard machine to keep one that you have going.Same sort of thing with cars-Scrapyard equipment is available that can pull the motor and transmission assembly out of a car-than the car body goes into a baler.-all on one unit.I am trying to remember the company that makes this machine-Have seen videos of it working-it can process many cars in an hour. The operator(one man can run this machine)uses the crane to place the car on the dismatling table-the crane can then be used to take out the engine and transmission, then the crane can place the car carcuss into the krusher-krush the car- and that same crane and operator can place the crushed body on a truck or stack it in a pile.Same with the engine-transmission assemblies. This beast can be deisal engine or electric powered. Some areas use this machine to destroy cars owned by people who were caught street racing-the "racer" gets to see his car ripped apart and crushed before his eyes!

Lexington Scrap

Let me know how that works for you. I have had no success in Lexington finding appliances unfortunately. Even most of the car junkyards won't let you on the lot which sucks. There is a place out in Bourbon Co. called Bourbon Auto that USED to in like 2001 anyway have a bunch of appliances in an area that looked from the 60's.

By the way Tolivac, that whole thing about the street racers, it would be nice to dump some fat @$$ Sheriif's car in there to see his reaction, they're more dangerous than the Civics and have the power to back up their ego. I'm not a fan of laws that allow things of that nature to happen especially with our vigil local law enforcements at work. I only say that because there are some areas that do similar things for some crimes. I also find it funny how small towns that seem to have money for such devices but can't manage textbooks at their schools or properly paved roads.

PS: Not ranting at you, just what people do with a little power on their hands. :)

My junkyard situation is pretty good-there are several good
car junkyards that i go to,one i have gone to for over 20yrs
some of those junkyards also get appliances from time to time
and besides stripping parts i have got a couple complete
machines for fixup...
The best ever for appliances was the gillette,wy.dump from
1982-'84;there was a long pit where garbage was buried and
along the edge there was a large, long heap of appliances,
car bodies,etc-they would remain there for around a year,
then a bulldozer would come along and push everything into
the pit-the dump was a few miles from my house and i would
often make the trek there on weekends(when the dump was not
active)with my tools and wagon and load up!!;motors, fans,
pumps,pulleys,wiring,electronic parts,ETC.-Would get some
strange looks coming back with my wagon groaning under the
load!.There were a lot of cool and interesting washers and
dryers there:a pink late '50s filter flo,a '64 kelvinator,
a '60s philco ford(that i took the motor/pump from),
lots of rollermatics(but no unimatics or 1-18s)a couple
solid tub norges, lots of '60s/70s BDs,a couple japanese
twin tubs,a '64 maytag condenser dryer, and lots more!
I still have some of the parts i got back then and some of
the machines and devices i made out of the parts.
-very,very fond memories!!

Yeah Tim the only junkyard I ever go to is A&A in Berea, but they aren't very good about letting you go back in there unless you tell them exactly what you want, and they'll look it up and see if it's back there. Case in point, I went for a radio for a Honda CR-V. The Accord radio would be the same, but I couldn't get it until I told him, "Oh, I forgot, it's actually an Accord" and I went back and got it. The only appliances they have there are the ones that were in the backs of trucks when they were junked.

I do remember when I was in High School and in the Rapid City S.Dak area-The "Jalopy Jungle"Junkyard-used to go there and salvage car radios-Since I liked radios at that time-had a good collection of them-the Vibrator equipped tubed radios were best at that time--esp the Cadillac ones-those had a Push Pull output-nice little amp-I often used it to feed other things into!Jalopy Jungle had one of those large Harris Car baler machines-could only watch from a distance-but was neat to see it work-the growel and puff of smoke from its deisel engine-then a car baled to a peice the size of a coffee table-some folks even used their old car as a base for a coffee table after it was run thru that machine.
Then there was an autoimotive parts and surplus store called "Motive Parts"On I 90 just outside of Rapid City-same as Jalopy Jungle. They had surplus electronic items-bought lots of those-and they had a Curtus Wright Airplane engine on a test stand --was for sale if you wanted it.Don't think it would work.Behind the store was an appliance graveyard-All sorts of machines-at that time wasn't interested in washers and such-but so wish I could go back in time and go thru that yard now!Bet LOTS of Treasures there!Sadly they went thru that Krusher at Jalopy Jungle.
I don't support "street racing"Many of the people that do it don't know what they are doing and put others in danger-and try to close off streets so folks can't use them. And at the same time don't like "bully" sheriffs or police either. In these cases both of their cars should be run thru the dismantler machine.Jurisdictions that use these machines contract their use from a junkyard or salvage facility that has one.The town or whatever does not own the unit. These are quite expensive to purchase.Something like half mil each.
Oh yes-don't think junkyard oiperators let people into the facility nowadays becuase of laibility and insurance reasons-so the junkyard operator removes parts from the vehicles and puts them in a warehouse like place so the buyer can look thru them to find the parts he wants-no more buyers taking parts from the cars themselves.

junkyard washers

just checked my favorite junkyard and scored two washers, both
undamaged and not even grubby!:
-2002 whirlpool "estate"27"DD,after it's fixed and proven this
will probably go to the consign store.
-early 2000s nortag "atlantis" if fixable i might keep this one
if i like it.

Glad for "cfz2882" for finding NICE washers in the junkyard in his neighborhood before the Al-Jon or other machines got to work on them-and machines so recent!By the time the swap shops in my area get done with the machines-parts removed and so forth-repaired ones go on their sales floor-the "duds" go to the dump or scrapper.

two dryers got

got two dryers this past saturday;
-1979 gas lady kenmore with electronic panel, was smashed up
so stripped for parts-had brand new rollers, belt and idler!
-1985 kenmore gas,a little grubby but i might fixup and keep
haven't really looked it over much yet,but sounds like there
is several dollars worth of coins rattling around in it!

The dryer with the coins in it may be worth it for the coins alone!surprized the scrappers don't take the coins from washers and dryers--bet it would add up -before throwing them into a krusher, shredder,or baler.
