That is the same style pitcher from which we were served Hi C in kindergarten! How neat!
Refrigerators tried many things to keep fresh foods from drying out; there even used to be ads in magazines showing color pictures of what two uncovered containers of something like pudding looked like in brand X and the brand being advertised. Brand X was dried out, but the one being advertised was still moist. The dryness of the cold air was why Frigidaire called their vegetable bin the Hydrator. Gradually, I guess everything was best covered, especially as newer refrigerators kept food at colder temperatures. Temps in older boxes like Monitor tops and Servels were much warmer, often in the 40s compared to the mid 30s in newer boxes. That is why older refrigerator manuals and food books gave such short times for keeping food in the refrigerator before it would no longer be safe to eat. A friend who remembers his childhood in northern Alabama with a ice box said that it did not get cold enough to make jello set up in the summer. Before they got electric power & a refrigerator, they could only make jello in the winter when it was put outside to harden.
