Are self checkout lines a thing of the past?

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

I've worked in retailing at Wal Mart for the past two years and even though I'm a Sales Associate, I have probably done more cashiering than anything else!

I'll echo the thought that w/ the repairs, maintenance & just the manufacturing, up-keep & installation of those "Machines" can cost, that nothing can replace actual PEOPLE running registers....

There are times, however I turn to automation (though NEVER at where I work!) when I am in the check-out line, and that's because I'm in a hurry, usually buying what I can't find at work (or what my wife won't let me have in the house!) and that's when along w/ turning to my competitors, I'll let the Robot do my cashiering for me...

Hey Dave,

(or what my wife won't let me have in the house!)

And do you also have to resort to "sneaking" these things into the house your wife won't let you bring in!  Yeah, I have to sneak things in too!  Jim

LOL!

This old shirt?  Lord honey, I've had it for months!  Don't you remember seeing it before?

I do most of my supermarket shopping at Pak 'N Save, which is the sort of bulk version of Safeway. It has pretty much the same product selection, except the store is much bigger, with wider aisles, and I find that usually stuff like frozen entrees have a better selection and are not as often sold out as is the Safeway downtown.

The lighting is also better in the bigger store. They went to a darker decor downtown, with brownish fluorescent lighting, which I find disconcerting. And then there is the coffee kiosk that crowds the checkout area and serves no useful function IMHO.

The Pak 'N Save doesn't have self checkout, but they do have self-bagging. There are two conveyor belts at cash register, and the checker directs your purchases to one or the other. Then there are bags and a big button you can lean against to advance the conveyor. I like this approach because I know exactly what should be in each bag, although sometimes things can get backed up a bit if someone is a slow bagger.

The other place I buy groceries is Costco. Where, of course, there are no bags and if you're lucky you'll find a box or two to hold smaller items. But it being Costco, there generally aren't too many of those ;-). But it is where I shop for meat/poultry/fish, and select fruits and veggies, as well as bulk dry foods (bread, coffee, rice, cereal, etc...).

Kroger bags for you. I put stuff on the belt in bag order. Bulk (beer, water), dry (paper, cans), cold (dairy), frozen, fresh (veg), fragile (bread, eggs). They seldom get bagged that way. OTOH nothing has been damaged so guess I can't complain. But sometimes do have to reposition things. Like, supervise.

No offense to union baggers but they aren't necessarily as perceptive as I am. Likewise, if I were a bagger I'd probably still piss some people off. "I WANTED the eggs under the beer, you eee-diot!"
