I've seen this sort of thing before

If you look at the bid history you'll see that this is primarily a contest between three bidders with more money than sense, none of them willing to let go. In cases like this, seemingly ordinary items can get bid up to stratospheric prices that are otherwise completely unjustifiable. While this works out well for this seller, this sort of nonsense often results in an immediate and ridiculous increase in start prices and reserve prices for similar items in the following weeks. Months can pass before sellers catch on to the fact that this was a fluke, and that they can't all make a killing selling old boxes of laundry detergent. Meanwhile, the rest of us have no choice but to sit by and wait for sanity to return to the market.

d-jones hit it on the head. Rich and I have also seen this many times with different things. In some cases it's been a couple/few bidders with more money than brains, in others two museums or other institutions with deep pockets who just want whatever it is.

5#4 now weighs 6#8? Sounds like at least a pound of moisture has gotten in there and has probably caked the product. Hope the winner has a big bag and a hammer if they're planning on using it!

This would be an excellent item to put on "The Tonight Show" for the "Stuff We Found On E Bay" segment.

And when in the past 30 some odd years has anyone found detergent in this size going for $1.22?

I also like the comic-style banter on the back of the box. Very original.

Here's another one, this time over a box of Tide

If you check the bid history, it's the same two bidders going at it again. Just a few months ago I picked up a box of Tide with the original graphics that Tide entered the market with back in the forties. It was in really nice shape and I paid around twenty dollars for it. Since then I've seen several others go for similar prices. What's happening on eBay right now is nothing short of a stupid attack. I've been known to have stupid attacks in the past myself, but thankfully, none that have cost me this much money.
