Good morning. I am new to the site, thans to revvinkev!!! My name is Keyone. I have the Maytag 3000 series front loader set. I was wondering if I can use the Ariel or Persil detergent in my front loader?? It doesn't say on the package, so I figured I would ask,

You may be better off asking this in the Deluxe forums I think.

Doing a bit of google-fu, both Persil and Ariel appear to be HE detergents, so I don't think they could harm your machine. Your clothing on the other hand.....

Something to think about... Your Maytag is considerably larger than that of a typical European style washing machine. According to the specifications, your machine has a 4.0 cu.ft tub, whereas your Typical European washer has a 1.75 to 2.5 cu.ft tub.

I would probably use the instructions on the box first and see what kind of cleaning results you get. If the results do not come out to your liking, then I would experiment by using more detergent.. (ie. For example, using 1.5 times the recommended amount)

Of course, I'd also probably watch how much soap would be left over in the rinse cycles and see if oversudsing is happening. In theory, if you did it right, the last rinse should be nearly clear with no soap residue in the water.

I'm sure other people on this forum have a few select words to say.. but considering I've never seen a box of Persil or Ariel in my life and that I actually wash using Generic Costco branded Non-HE powder, I think everything I say you should take with a grain of salt!

Are the Ariel and Persil UK versions? Persil sold in the rest of Europe is different to UK Persil but they are all HE

The Ariel that I have seen was from Mexico. I was recently in London in November, and wanted to ship some home, but I wasn't sure of how it would affect my FL.

Cookietaster12, all UK detergents are HE unless otherwise stated ie it will say Handwash or Twintub powder/liquid.

Qualin, UK Persil is made by Unilever, Persil from the rest of Europe is made by Henkel. I believe they have different formulations. UK Persil is sold in France under the name SKIP.

Thanks Paul...There is a Kmart down the street from my house that sells the powder form of Ariel...I think that I am going to pick up a pack and try it out!

The Ariel that is commonly found here (in Southern California) is for the Mexican market and comes in a blue bag. I have found it produces a fair amount of suds and cannot use it in our LG front loader. The blue Ariel bags have a small picture of a front loading machine and reference using Ariel Baja Espuma (low sudsing) for front loaders. I have looked everywhere and never been able to find the Ariel Baja Espuma.

Ariel I have obtained when traveling in Europe is designed for front loading machines and produces little to no foam.

Ariel works great but personally, I prefer Persil. I have used both the Unilever and Henkel versions and love them. I am able to get by with much less than indicated by the dosing instructions and everything comes out immaculate.

@labboy...that is the same one that is here...it is in a blue bag...SMDH...i knew I should have shipped it while I was in London...Amazon sells it, but it is waaaaay to expensive!

Ariel

How Ariel is packaged in the UK.

Green box means Biological (with enzymes, to break down stains). Most prevalent variant. "Actilift" seems to be a stain-freeing polymer that protects the clothes.

Purple box means "colour safe", so oxygen bleach is not present.
Blue large box means Non-Biological (no enzymes). Not a very common variant.
Blue small box saying "Handwash". High sudsing, suitable for twintubs.

UK Ariel (P&G) and UK Persil (Lever) are excellent, but I prefer the UK Persil. Neither are available except via some importing website groceries...

The Persil we have here in the US is Henkel Persil from Germany. I haven't tried it but everyone says it is excellent.

The Ariel we have here is from Mexico P&G. Over the last year, they have messed with the formula. While it is very good and very strong in cleaning and scent, it does not seem to suds up as much as it used to. Use it with moderation and it should work fine.

Formula changes with Mexican Ariel

We can still find the "good" Mexican Ariel that has STPP in it occasionally. It shows up in many of the ethnic groceries around here.

The phosphate free version is more common in large stores at Home Depot and Lowe's had has a label on it it is intended for the US market.

I've seen boxes of Persil at Ethnic stores here but didn't think much of it. I can't believe it's so expensive online. My wife would kill me if I spent $100 on a box of detergent.

The next time I see it at one of these stores, I'll try some if it's not too unreasonably priced.

Maybe I'll also take some pictures if they'll let me so I can get some expert opinions.

Bubbels

In the UK for some reason we like to see bubbels while the washings done or we dont think its working. But when I visit Germany to stay at friends I use there machine with Persi and theres not a bubbel to be seen !

To Be Clear Both Ariel and Persil

Sold in the UK and or Europe are TOL detergents and you cannot fail with either. It mainly comes down to preferences in terms of scent and slight edge one form may have over another for shifting certain stains.

Unilever sells Ariel in the UK and Persil in France (both Unilver and Henkel own the rights to the Persil name via a long story that has been told over and over before in the group, so won't bother again), but Henkel does not sell Persil in France (supposedly because it means parsely in French, but that hasn't bothered Unilever). Le Chat is Henkel's (Persil) in France, as is Dixan in other EU markets.

The Ariel from Mexico has nothing to do with any product sold in the EU/UK.

Unless stated otherwise *all* detergents for automatic washing machines sold in the UK and EU are low sudsing. Have been for years ever since front loaders became dominate in the washing machine market. In some countries you may still be able to find high sudsing detergents but they are sold for hand washing and twin tubs (for those that still have such machines).

Persil is a Unilever product in the UK, Ireland, France and New Zealand.

In the UK, Ireland and NZ Unilever uses the Persil name to market its top of the line detergents.
In France, it's used for specialist natural detergents, while Skip is used for the mainstream TOL stuff.

In other markets, Henkel owns the Persil trademark.

Ariel is P&G's European counterpart to Tide. It's a massive brand.

Was All in the US market ever made by Unilever? I am just wondering because you used to be able to buy All "Small and Mighty", just like the liquid version of Persil.

Yeah, All, Wisk and Surf were Unilever USA brands, they were sold to Sun Products.

Same with Snuggle, which was basically Comfort.

All was enzyme-free.
Not sure about Wisk and Surf.

Rinso was an old Unilver brand too
