Atlantis "maintenance" ?

Attention Maytag experts. I have a question.
My "In-Laws" have a Maytag Atlantis washer. They say it occasionally "doesn't spin right". I'd guess the unit to be 6 years old approx.
Their Maytag dealer has them dropping a cup of dishwasher detergent into an empty cycle (just water) fairly frequently (approx every couple of weeks).
Any idea what this is supposed to accomplish? They live on a farm if that means anything...

Could be a stretched belt, or does it have a high drain? Not sure what you mean by "doesn't spin right". Does it go off balance alot; clothing too wet at the end of the cycle?

The Atlantis is one of my favorite top loaders. Was there ever an Atlantis with a touch-pad interface?

Well, I know what I was told do do that for.......

My mother has an old Maytag TL that had a mold smell, and that took care of it, I told her to let it soak over night, and vuala, no mold smell. I also had mom wash a load with hot water and detergent to make sure. I am not certain why your parents would be told to do that. Alot of American soap does not have phosphates in it any more, hense why my mom would have a mold smell. other than that, a streched belt would be what I would guess. It is as simple as a new belt i would think.It is what we would call a " Nor-Tag" design.I am sure that there is nothing to it, although, I do not know where the belts are on your folks machine.

Sorry for the sketchy details. I didn't pry. However, I do recall them mentioning about spin problems.
Most likely it IS a worn belt as you suggest and their servicer is a quack.

I would also

check the level. Bad leveling can make for poor spin that would not trip the notoriously sensitive Maytag out of balance switch.

Go to repairclinic.com for help on how to order and install the belt. It IS something you can do for yourself before a service call is placed..

I don't believe it's the belt.So many times,customers I sold that,the Magic Chef and the Performas to had the same problems

1)They use too much high sudsing detergent to wash and the suds build up in between the inner and outer tubs.Once the cycle's over and the suds go out,they become liquid and build up into the inner tub causing the clothes to absorb the water until they're saturated with water then it begins to refill the outer tub.

2)The standpipe that holds the drai hose must be at least 36"up from the floor.If not,there's what is called a backwash where the water from the pipe backs up into the washer.
