I have to agree with the statements above..

and now its been spelt out in black and white I can see it will have its uses and maybe some will not even bother with it but hey its called choice!

Austin

Robert one thing I want to ask is.....

when writing a reply etc I want to know how difficult would it be to have the choice of preview message or just " Post " if we are happy with it ?

Hi Austin, oh maybe two to three hours worth of work, so not too bad. I'll add that to my to-do list for sometime in the future if that is something you think would beneficial.

<blockquote>The way it was explained to me by a few members who were asking for this feature is they generally don't read and respond to a small minority of members. When they see a user who they don't read they scroll right on by never reading what that member wrote.</blockquote> That explains a lot ...

I very much appreciate the new feature, I just now put it to use, and even prior to me "hiding" a certain person, they hadn't posted on this thread. I would imagine most of us have a member (or more than one, for me it's just one) that annoys the living crap out of you, whether it is because of needless or just plain pointless posts, or very poor spelling/grammar, that you would rather not see posting. I think it is a great feature for a great forum, and it might even help keep the peace a little more around here.

I appreciate everyone's contribution to any discussion.  I think it is wonderful that when a thread goes "south" you have the option of not being exposed to negative energy.  I doubt if I would "hide" someone forever, just till the dust settles.  All of us have posted things that can be understood 2 different ways.... and it is an election year :-) sometimes we go from Brady Bunch to the Manson family in a heartbeat.  Hot button issues  are most always a sliding scale opinion.

I am not going to use it for any reasons, simply I don't feel that someone deserves really to be hidden or ignored in here, everyone's precious to me.....even the bitchiest, uneducated and ungrammatical ( me
??? LOL) member on here will bring something good....
Also....I think this feature whenever will be used will bring discontinuity in posts that may have the potential to lead in unconvenient misunderstandings.
Without mentioning that for how much a member could be "hated" there will be always those occasions when he will start a thread/discussion and interesting aspects from other contributors will be discussed and shared in that thread, but since the author is hidden, the entire discussion and so aspects from other contributors will be, since automatically all the thread will not be showed...right?
Interesting info will be missed.
Actually all this fact of hiding makes me laugh.....
But as long as some are happy with it, I am happy for them....

Look guys nothing is set in stone here. Please let's just take a wait and see attitude with all this. Trust me, if I feel that this new feature is somehow detrimental overall to the website, I will remove it. If one of you guys notice something seems odd and you think it might have to do with the hiding feature, please send me a note and let me know. I will take an unbiased look for sure, that last thing I want to do is bring on something that might cause any discourse. There is a chance that with some exceptions, there is a generational difference in opinions on something like this as well.

But personally I suspect that eventually this will go unnoticed to the majority who wont use it, but again let's wait and see how it goes.

I would really appreciate that.

Another Bug?

Robert, as of just a couple of hours ago, when I launch AW a second tab automatically opens with with icons for accessing the various social media sites, etc.

I don't know if this is related to the code changes you made for the "hidden member" upgrade or not, but it doesn't happen when I open other sites.

Hiding posts that are not being read in the first place as some kind of time saving feature sounds intriguing. Can't be that small a number of unreadable posts or posters who don't want to read certain posts unless, of course, they are slow scrollers, or there is some other compelling reason that does not permit someone to just keep scrolling on by. Kind of sounds a little OCD maybe? It's definitely very 21st century.

Most discussion sites--I am on dozens--have an 'ignore' feature. Congrats Robert providing that feature here as some felt it desireable.

Without counting I think I only have 4 users 'ignored' web-wide. A couple on IMDB whose content is always gibberish, and a couple on RCGroups whose first post I encountered was something nasty.

Nobody here even approaches the/my threshold for hiding their content. So I am extremely unlikely to use the feature here. I hope I don't give anyone cause to use it on me.

If you catch me being full of isht feel free to tell me. Better to know than not to know.

Update

The extra tab issue was related to Firefox. Per their troubleshooting page, I performed a "Reset" and that fixed the problem.

I thought I would test it out, but it wouldn't let me block you Robert. It says I can't block the "Webmaster". ;) Not that I would want to. LOL

Robert, I think it is a great idea to be able to block people if someone so desires to. While I in reality probably won't, it is still nice to see you always striving to make this a better site.

One question I do have(I don't know if someone else mentioned it or not), is when I read a thread I typically will hit the back button, and it will take me back to the forum in the same place I was prior to reading that thread. However if I am in the Shopper Square and click on a thread in there. When I hit the back button, I get taken to the top of the Shopper Square forum. I then have to scroll down to where I was. I'm not sure if this is something that can be fixed or not. Just curious.

Thanks Ralph for letting me know it was just a local issue for you and not AW.

Hi Justin, I believe this is a IE7/IE8/IE9 bug that they fixed in IE10. If you are using an earlier version of Internet Explorer you might want to upgrade to IE10 as Microsoft has fixed many (but not all grrrrr) compatibility issues so IE10 behaves more like Chrome, FireFox and Safari.

Thanks

Robert - understand the reasons; imagine having this a while ago when Vacuumland went all jungle. Myself, I don't see why I would use it. I get to know others and their range of thoughts, emotions, and rationale(that's one for self-digestion).

Not related per se, and I could message you, but maybe others would be interested in this....

Is it just a function of my browser, Safari (version shown) that ..when I search for posts by other members, including my own to see what I posted on some day...the resulting search shows less postings for a given day.
Today, I searched "ovrphil" and the thread list captured did not show all the postings from 3-24-2014; instead, it shows a total of 16, and only ONE on 3-24-2014. I posted more than one. :-)

It's not critical, but it would be helpful if it actually had a range to choose, for the search (pop-up menu) that
would search a string of dates, so one wouldn't yank up all the former posts of a member. Well, just my thoughts, thanks and if someone already suggested this or you have it on the back burners, or...life is just happening first (lol)...no problem. Just my thoughts. Thanks for all you do!!!

Hi Phil, I assume you mean and only ONE on 3-25-2014 from you statement above?? Actually this would have nothing to do with your browser. But please note it takes a several hours for new threads to become searchable in the system, so the number might be a little low for a bit on the same day. I suspect that is what you were seeing, because when I do a search now on your username 5 new threads of yours come up, and I'm sure more will add on as the day continues on.

I'll add a date selection to the Super-Searchalator at some point soon, that would probably be a nice addition.

Just to clarify

Hi Robert and thanks for replying this early...no hurry on a reply here, but ...

Yes, to answer your question...so...

Just to clarify.. I'm referring to threads initiated. Postings will be more, of course. Sorry if I used the wrong references.

So, whether one uses the Search the Shopper's Square Forum or the Supersearchalator(cute name, btw), the retrieved threads are missing a lot of what was actually posted.

Just to better explain....I had many thread postings between 3-11-2014 and 3-23-2014, but using either search engine(Supersearchalator or "Search in the Shopper's Square Forum") returned NO thread postings.
Impossible. :-)

Regarding what is returned, there are gaps, but I don't see a pattern, as I first thought might be happening, like a 14 day/10 day/14 day/10 day/ 5 day/ 14 day..you get the idea, just some pattern, not those particular days...that might be happening within the search algorithm. (?) But I don't see a pattern, only random gaps where my threads aren't showing up,when searching.

..and I understand that 24 hours is the usual clock time needed before databases are updated and users will see today's postings, tomorrow...that's ok, it's not what I'm referring to.

Finally, and thanks for hangin' with me on this Robert...the archive is great. In fact, it seems to capture all the threads. I'm not a programmer(well, I did it for a while, but not in Java, C or today's tools)...but do you search on the archive, if the archive is up to date, on a daily basis? Ok, I'm overstepping my territory here - just thinking, since it appears to be archiving all the threads per member, maybe it's the data base that should be searched. I'll stop here, and thank you again.

Phil

Just to better explain....I had many thread postings between 3-11-2014 and 3-23-2014

Hi Phil, but when I just entered you username the Search-a-lator it returns over 2300 postings, and some are definitely between 3-11-2014 and 3-23-2014.

We are probably using it differently. I will email you shortly about this so we wont take over this thread with an unrelated topic.

Thanks for your help.

Can we have a B. Slap button? You click on it and on the other side a 3D hand comes out and smacks the offender silly.

All kidding aside, personally, it's a feature I won't be using. Everyone has the right to an opinion, no matter how asinine it may appear to you personally.  I do however, see why others may find this feature useful.

Thanks Robert for continuously improving AW!
