Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

telethon? :-) ..hmm..

But isn't it a cost to maintain, upgrade(software and hardware when needed)aw.org? I was thinking that as this site has surely grown and it's used so much now, why would a hobbyist/enthusiast continue to fund it without support. Whatever the facts, Robert hasn't asked members to donate and Malcom you're right .

I was only thinking that it costs to run a website and this site has a value exceeding a buck...if the ads
take care of the operational needs, and Robert (and company) reap additional benefits, let the ads rock...enjoy the dollar I donated and keep the change if it wasn't , as a supportive thanks.

Yup, that is what the donations/upgrades offset, the server fees to pay to have the site hosted, which now runs into the thousands on a yearly basis because the site has so many hits from all over the world. All the software I wrote from scratch so the actual financial costs involved for that is minimal.

Malcolm .com or .org is taxed the exact same way, there is no difference in the eyes of the IRS.

Well, as I understand, running a website can be quite the costly business. Apparently akin to owning a car! Its good that the decision has been made to include advertisements, especially when many people come here, join post once or twice then run away forever.

However, I didn't see any advertisements, even after I switched off "Do Not Track: Plus." There are now at most around 3 different companies "tracking" you through this website now (Non-members/logged out upgraded members).
And I have that installed not because it blocks some popup advertisements (PLEASE Don't allow those popup "Mackeeper" or "Quibids" ads!), but because I don't want Google making money off selling my personal information.

But good work Robert, I'm sure this will help ensure the running costs of the site are met, and perhaps you have something for yourself or for "site upgrades" later on ;-D

ROBERT ~

We've been over this many times. The fact that this place exists with all the unique and priceless data it contains, and is FREE is a joke. I want you to make as much money as you deserve and then retire so we can establish "The Washing Machine Institute," a teaching academy and production facility. With advertising, the hope and dream is finally on the horizon. You do not need to be humble about revenue. All these gifts all these years both on the board AND OFF, for ALL of us, you should be showered with money, period!

Love,

It is a great idea when I had to log in tonight I saw the ad pop up for Lowes sale on washers and dryers.Thank You for all that you do Carl

A general advice for ads for firefox browser users....

I start with saying that would be best if anyone would upgrade, I usually choose monthly upgrades (30 days) I think I donated more than what it is suggested for a whole year, I'm going to upgrade the 1st of Janauary for the whole year, but for those who cannot and are bothered for the ads there are free extensions that blocks ads and the one I use for my browser is called "Ad block plus" that actually would block any ads and pop-up from every website, now I'm not upgraded and I don't see any ads, I gotta admit sometimes pop ups can be really boring but I would accept it in full to see them on here knowing it helps Robert keeping this community alive and I also hope it will give him a personal earn since he deserves it all, I installed it months ago to get rid of facebook ads and it works on here also of course...
As said would be nice if anyone would give his own support, and would not upgrade just to get rid of ads......
But there is this thing and I tought it would be useful to share it on here not much for the ads on here (I hope anyone thinks about it like I do), but for a general internet surfing and facebook "freedom" also, it is so nice to see facebook pages finally clean of ads.
Thanks Robert for all you do!

.

I would appreciate it if...

I think it would be nice to keep the discussion of ad circumvention out of this thread after I just spent a lot of time and energy getting ads to help offset costs of running this site. Not everyone can afford to upgrade, nor should they be enticed to do so. Unlike many sites I see out there I made the ads as unobtrusive as possible without slowing the site down.

Thank you.

Check Box

Robert,

Would it be possible to add a check box to a user's profile to display the ads? So, if an upgraded member wanted to have the ads display, this would make it happen.

Hi Malcom, I had thought of the same thing earlier and it is on my to do list for next week. As soon as I have it written, tested and implemented I'll let everyone know. Some of the animated Whirlpool ads are super cute! I like the one with the fork getting showered for Whirlpool dishwashers.

Robert . . .

As with everyone else I agree that you should make income off this site!

Regarding the custom software you wrote as noted in Reply 40, I have to say once again that it has totally spoiled me for any other site - I find myself logging into a variety of other boards and then getting annoyed at how clunky their software is for the user; thanks again for the hard work.

Robert:
I didn't think it could have been a problem for me to give that advice before.
As you can understand I said I'm HAPPY you found this way to amortize the costs and I'm totally with you with your choiche.
I'm also said I would not be bothered to see ads on here knowing it helps this wonderful community standing!
I didn't even think it was a problem or offensive or that could hurt you to put on here or elsewhere, I just told you I'm so happy you choose to put the ads and thought that for whose that maybe would think about differently (if there're) there was this option and not only for this website...
I wrote that sure it was not going to afflict anything in terms of money for you, if so I would have never do that of course,I thought that it would not change anything for you, rather keeping this site as it was before the ads advent for the members and you keeping the advantage of having money for the ads, that was my only purpose I wrote that for!
Confidant that waht you did is for a reason and sorry if it caused any problems I didn't think about, I apologize, and thank you again for all what you do.
Freddy

No problem what so ever Freddy, I realized that as I read what you wrote, but I thought it might be taken differently by others. I do appreciate your understanding my position.

The trouble with googleads...

...is that there are at least 3 layered servers and because they tend to be chronically oversubscribed they add between 300% and infinity to the overall site response time. Not just here, but EVERYwhere googleads is invoked (I watch the activity bar).

No problem with site advertising, SOMEthing has to pay for all this fun. Were my finances as they were 11 years ago I would pay the entire cost myself but I can barely keep the lights on today.

Problem with the sloth of googleads. As market leader they owe their subscribers 300 times better performance. Instead, as market leader, they don't give a [expletive] what their performance is.

@unimatic1140

Certainly not trying to circumvent advertising here, otherwise I'd be using those sorts of utilities.

As stated in my previous post, having recently learned how much Google + other companies track you whilst on the net, I installed "Do-Not-Track Plus," which gives me the piece of mind that Google, Facebook and other bastards aren't gathering my information and SELLING it to Google and whatnot for profit!
Hopefully though the ads here would be more "standardised" to suit the genre of the website - certainly hoping none of us are getting ads for online pharacies and such!

But good for you, this is well deserved income. I wouldn't want to take that away from you. Perhaps I'll donate to this wonderful site again, once I get some funds in order (I've only got $5!)

Take Care,

Washer111

After reading through this thread I logged out to see the ads. Yup, the animated WP ads showing up for me.

I really like how they are there, but not "in your face" like on so many other sites.

Nicely done Robert and yes, a EXCELLENT idea for all the reasons listed above!

Kevin

Thanks Kevin,

In case anyone didn't see the new thread I created earlier, upgraded members no longer have to log out if you wish to see the ads. I've added a new profile feature to allow you to toggle the ads on and off...

I've added a new profile feature to allow you to toggle

And that new thread is being treated with the utmost love and respect that only a AW Webmaster deserves... LOL!

Thanks for all you do.

I agree with washer111. Facebook (and a few others) have become so intrusive we've resorted to filtering their domains and servers at our router. If you're on FB we don't wish to see you, let alone like you. :) It's the most direct way to starve the vultures until they're out of business, with any luck it should be soon. Their stock price has tanked from day one.
