Attention: GE cooking Appliance experts

I ran into this today and picked it up for some reason. Didn’t realize what it was until I got it home. I don’t know much about the cooking stuff, mainly washers and dryers so I’m positive someone here can tell me about this.

This is what I was going after and really didn’t need it either. NOS I believe it’s a rangeaire made by GE.

The 36" coppertone hood is intended to be installed with a companion cooktop with a plug-in connector that joined the two.  Your hood is a "deluxe" version, and includes controls for a Sensi-Temp burner on the cooktop.  Was the cooktop not present when you bought the hood?

 

The avocado hood is from maybe the 80's maybe - after the time that GE and Hotpoint began to share a lot of items.  Notice that the hood does not say that it is GE, simply says it is a quality product manufactured by GE.  It can/was also sold as a companion item in Hotpoint settings.  Same thing happened with their garbage disposals; they no longer claimed to be GE products, but were a quality product, blah, blah, blah.  Still - that's a nice hood.

Thanks for the information. The woman said she picked both of them up from a yard sale where apparently no one wanted them. The cooktop May have been at the sale but she said she never saw it as I sent her a picture of what one looks like. After I bought the avocado one I told her how much I liked the colored appliances and she told me she had the coppertone hood as well. I picked it up for a whopping $5.

The Coppertone hood with surface unit controls was used with certain models of the GE Mark 27 drop-in range, in addition to the built-in cooktops as Lawrence mentioned. One of my neighbors had one like that- theirs was Avocado.

Hi Melvin, I have had this exact hood with built-in burner controls in our weekend home for 30 years [ except ours is brushed chrome ]

 

It has been a wonderful cook-top to cook on, it is easy to use and keep clean and very logical in its layout.

 

I think I still have a number of extra CTs and connecting cables if you want to use it somewhere.

 

I don't think this particular hood was ever used with the Mark '27' drop-in-ranges [ I never saw one with 3 size SAT element ]

 

I believe that GE actually still built the avocado hood as well as the earlier CT hood, the earlier CT hood was built from around 1963-6, the avocado hood was built in the late 70s into the 80s.

It would be cool to have the cooktop and connection cables but I don’t know what I’d do with it. For $5 dollars I had to take it home. The serial starts with ww which is another one I can’t locate. I dated the avocado hood to November 1977.

I found the hood and CT at a thrift store a little over 30 years ago, but they did not have the required connecting cable so I told them it was useless except for parts and they sold it to me for $10.

 

A week later I was in the same store and they recognized me and said they had found the cable and gave it to me, so as we built out the kitchen I installed this CT.

 

I can not imagine how many hundreds of hours we have cooked and canned on this great CT, I would never consider replacing it.

This is a GE JH96 hood to be used with a GE JP86 cooktop with a Sensi-Temp burner. 2 fan speeds.  This combination only!  Not for use with a Mark 27!    One hi-speed small burner.  Sensi-temp was 2800 or 3200 watts.  I grew-up with this!  Greg

The hood I remember my neighbor having was 30" wide, and had 4 sets of pushbuttons, in addition to the fan and light switches. After looking at the pics again (enlarging them), it was shaped like the second hood, rather than the first. I was over there the day it was installed (Summer 1972), and the hood and range are connected by a large metal-clad cable.

I thought it had Sensi-temp - I'll have to ask her about that. I may have that confused with the Sutton's, who got a GE built-in oven and cooktop (Harvest) that same Summer, from the same dealer.

One thing about the GE dealer where these people bought from is that they would go to just about any length to get what the customer wanted. If my neighbors did have the Sensi-temp, the dealer may well have done whatever was necessary to make that happen. The lead salesman was a friend of my dad, and they had a lot of clout with GE. Even though the dealer was located in a small town, they were one of GE's largest dealers in Ohio, and had lots of builder accounts.

my catering thing, I came across two of these, and both of the clients thought it was a great idea, in that it was a way to keep the cooktop controls out of the way of small children

Even today after almost 30 years since the GE fancy hood left, if I'm in a hurry, I still reach-up to change "speeds!"   Hunting for the right control on today's fancy smoothtops is a pain I feel!  Give me a button or a dial anyday!  Greg
