Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

Sorry, Greg!! I have a 1968 version (one of the last made) waiting for me to finish in my garage. Then I'll have an N, J, and an E with the turquoise trimmings (release, agitator, start/lid knobs).

That one looks like it's in good condition. We dated Robert's demonstrator to (I think ... if I remember right) January 1962 on Saturday. This has to be about the same vintage or just before. The 1963 Model N I have has the "fancy" Maytag script on front; just after these.

Actually, I like the J almost better than the E. When the lid is off the J, you can really load it up; it's a big tub! The only problem was the lid ... making it more air-tight. Very easy to get water everywhere.

This machine looks like it was well cared for; somebody actually took the time to wipe it. The only thing I'd do after a thorough cleaning is replace the rollers. The bottom one looks a little worn and yellowed.

Ben ... it is a really good price and I don't think the restoration process would be too much. It does look well cared for and probably has not been in use for years.

I'm glad you're enjoying the magazines; they are fun to look at. Maytag was a good company years ago. Have you ran across any of the "Oldest Maytag" contests yet? Those are a hoot ... a lot of women still operating the wooden tub washer after 30 years and then getting a NEW Maytag; geez ... how great that was for them!!

Rich ... keep looking! These machines pop-up fairly often on eBay and who knows, maybe you have a Maytag dealer in your area who will watch out for you!!

I got my Model J from my cousin's in-laws after her mother-in-law passed away. They lived "on the farm" in rural Dassel, Minnesota and had a little house with a cellar underneath for food storage and a concrete slab for laundry. Myrtle had been gone about 4 years when I got it and there was still a little water left in it. It was horrible getting it up those "Minnesota" cellar steps. :-) So, it has a little history and I call it "Myrtle's Maytag". My cousin was elated that I took it and will enjoy seeing it when I get it done; a little family memory for her and her husband and his family ~ Mom's Maytag!

Each of our 'tags are from a different era. The J has the red Bakelite Gyrator. The Master (square cast aluminum tub) has the black lint filter agitator and the round one has the turquoise agitator. I think they stopped calling the agitators Gyrators after the AMP, which, I believe, still had references to Gyrafoam washing action in the ads with the three generations of Maytag dealers and three generations of Maytag washin' women.

The oil leaking may be that a seal in the wringer mechanism is cracked. Just drain out the oil, and replace the offending little bugger, and replace with new oil. I know it is easier said than done, but it will be woth it in the long run.
