A BIIIIIIIIIIG thanks to Dwight for giving me this absolute GEM!!! I am SOOOO excited to have such a BEAUTIFUL washing machine!!! Unfortunately, (well... not really unfortunately...) I'm flying down to Florida tomorrow and I won't be able to play with this machine until I get back! So it's gonna sit right here in the foyer until I get back and my football friend Andy comes and moves it to the basment for me! ;D The first thing my mom said when we got it home and in the house where she got a good look at it was "mom." My grandma had this machine or extremely similar in coppertone for short while as my grandpa worked for Whirlpool and got all new TOL prototype appliances every 6 months. There are some really interesting surprises about this machine I was not expecting at all, I'll list them as they appear in the pics! (surprise number one, the panel is lighted...)

Surprise number 4, a light blue agitator with a CHROME cap! LOOK AT THAT CHROME SHINE!!!!!

Surprise number 5, here's a shockng one, never knew this existed! A VERY low water level selection for hand washables, the manual (yes all the manuals are included!) states that the hand washables water level uses 7 gallons of water, LO uses 10 gallons and HI uses 18 gallons.

Now for a quick question, with the temperature selection buttons, are they supposed to stick inwhen pressed? When I push one, it just pops right back out and doesn't stay, is this something that needs fixing?

Jamie, one temp button should stay pressed in at a time. For many yeaers, this was the ONLY Whirlpool washer I'd ever consider, because of the speed control. Someone here used to have the matching dryer, I think even in avocado. the dryer featured the two-way door---side swing or drop down. It was quite large a dryer door for its day. I'm pea green with envy!!

Congratulations Jamie! And it lights up too. Thats a Cool Pool! I know you will have some fun with this one. That Surgilator is really great for good turnover with a large load.

Yes the buttons should stick in when they are depressed. You may want to try some spray contact cleaner in the back of the switches. You can purchase contact cleaner at Radio Shack, or most any electronic supply store. Don't "flood" the switch with the cleaner, just enough to get working properly again. Work the switches as they are being sprayed.

I think you'll find another surprise or two. If I recall, the hand-wash water level setting is mechanically linked to the handwash or extra-lo agitation speed.

This model may have the quiet-pak pulleys, motor mounts and thin drive belt. What an exciting find.

Timed bleach and softener dispensers. Super Wash option on both Normal and Perm Press.

The speed selections should be High, Med, and Low for agitation, High and Low for spin. Med agitation is the same as Low/Gentle on two-speed machines. Low is the slower 3rd motor speed, which isn't used for spin. Or agitation may be High, Low, and Ex Low, depending on the marketing terminology at the time.

The matching dryer had a dual-swing door, opening either down in the traditional hamper-style, or side-swing. Selection was by a lever concealed under the handle. There was one in John Lefever's warehouse at the 2002 convention. Picture attached.

The last incarnation of this pushbutton-style machine was the LDA-9800 in 1975-1976, which eliminated the 3rd motor speed, so it had four pushbuttons (with a blank space between the two agitate and two spin buttons) for the speed selection array instead of five (the button arrays were oriented vertically). The 1974 LAA-9800 still had three agitation speeds.
