those

were the pair I wanted and missed once here in the Atlanta area. Not that I don't like the Maytags, which are like new and do the job - but like the options on these machines...there will be other opportunities...thanks Gordon.

Whirlpool-made direct drive washers

Lisa,

I will echo what many others are saying about Whirlpool-made direct drive washers (i.e. Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Maytag, Amana, Admiral, Magic Chef, Crosley, Inglis, and Kenmore). Go for it and seek out a nice used set. They are plentiful and will provide many years of trouble-free use.

Stay away from Whirlpool's new top-load washers, though. They are absolute junk! I had one for just over a year and sold it because I hated it so bad. The lid lock, water flow restrictor, and lack of a mechanical timer and tub brake made for one of the worst machines I have ever used.

parts donor?

This thread makes me worry more about availability of parts in the future. I've got a '66 Whirlpool, '66 Kenmore, '64 Kenmore that are running great right now, but wondering if I should snag this Whirlpool as back up for parts. And if not me, maybe someone in the San Jose area could/should grab it?

Todd -

I don't think that machine would give you the parts you'd really want. The baseplate is not common between your washers and this one. You probably should only use new spin tubes and agitator shafts (or agitator shafts from 1978 and newer machines) in your washers, and there isn't much if anything in common in controls. Most of the rest of your parts are still out there new (pumps, belts, seals, etc).

I think you might really enjoy this machine, as it is quite different in capacity from what you're used to, and it would add a dimension to your collection for sure.

We could probably help you work on building a parts supply if you like.

Thanks for the feedback -- made contact with the listing party on Craigslist and am picking it up tomorrow. New house currently in escrow and should close soon. There's an awesome bedroom 13' x 13' right off the dining room that I'm going to convert into my new laundry room. Hopefully room for 20+ machines! (and I'm off to a good start with the 8 washers and 5 dryers I already have plus the new addition I'll be getting tomorrow!)

Gordon, thanks for helping push me into getting that machine! Even though we still haven't closed on the new house (probably next week), we've managed to "break in" and we just dropped it off in the garage today since we don't have any room here at our vacation house to store it. Of course I had to plug it in for a "spin" and it purrs like a kitten! Hope to have a formal wash-in next year. Will keep everyone posted.
