Quiet Please, There´s a Lady on Stage
Well after a rather "balmy" Friday of nearly 40F, temps have been dropping since, and now we are in for several days of bitter cold (<20F) and high winds.

Sung and warm here, thankfully, even if our building burns oil that is close to if not Bunker Fuel! *LOL*

Last night it dropped as low as -23F/-27C in a protected valley as we were driving through northern Iowa on I-35 heading home from Omaha. Once we got into the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area the city heat island effect warmed the temp all the way up to -8F/-22C. Love that, I know I'm a Nerd :-)

13 Below Here:

In Iowa's Cedar Valley, northeastern part of the state. Not as cold as Minnesota, though. The high today was a whopping 4 degrees.

I wanted a cooler climate, and by gum, I got it. Since I like winter and cold weather, I'm fine with what's going on. Don't mind shovelling snow, etc. The only drawback I've found so far is one that doesn't have as much to do with the weather as it does unintelligent design. Keeping hidden windshield wipers free of ice is a PITA; snow and ice get down in that trough and have to be cleared away. If our auto industry was based in California, I could maybe understand how looks took precedence over function. But's it's based in Michigan, where all they have to do is look out the window to see that winter is going to be a problem sometimes. Forty-three years after hidden wipers were introduced (the '67 Pontiac Grand Prix was first), people are still struggling with them in winter. Stupid. The necessity for the struggle, that is, not the people.

Somebody please put some of this cold in an envelope and send me by air mail LOL.

It's 5am here, the A/C is working at full speed and I couldn't sleep yet because it's too hot.

I just can't stop sweating.

I wish I could fill my bathtub with crushed ice or snow, but I'm sure it would melt in seconds.

I just decided that tomorrow morning (if i wake up) I'm going to fill my pop up pool in the dining room, like all summers.

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Pretty cold here too. The basement is so cold that when the Maytag starts to agitate it looks like it's on gentle. I have a electric heater in my bedroom and it's still cold so I went around and turned on all my IBM typewriters for some extra heat, not that they really give a lot. I need a nice big bear to keep me warm.

Cold in the South

It was 18 here in Atlanta this morning. Plenty cold for me. Now send us some snow. The more the better...

I eating a bowl of hot chili at 9:05 in morning while sitting in front of a space heater with my feet wrapped up in a blanket.

Probably nothing compared to parts of the U.S.

But we've had snow for over 2 weeks now, first White Christmas I've seen, and yet more snow on the way.

Temperatures have been down as low as -8c (17f) in these parts, which for us is freezing.

Coldest it's been in rather a long time I'd say

This was my Mum's garden on Christmas morning :D

O.K. so it's not really very much, but it's rather a lot for over here. :)

There's a fair bit more now.

Wipers:

"Many car owner's here simply extend their windshield wipers "up and out" when a heavy snow storm starts."

That works for snow, true. But it doesn't help with ice, because the ice that collects in the wiper trough keeps the wipers from moving, since the base of each wiper arm begins down in the trough. In fact, if you were to turn your wipers on when the arms were trapped by ice, you would risk damage to the arms at the very least. It's also possible to burn out the wiper motor or even damage the mechanism that makes both wipers work in tandem.

So, for ice, it's just a fact of life - you have to de-ice that trough. Oh, well - there are so many nice things here, that's small potatoes.

Cold in Amsterdam too...

Not as cold as in some areas of the USA though, but cold enough to wrap palm trees in protective foil.

Yesterday I saw for the first time this winter substantial ice formation in the canals.

(took this picture while shopping for yoghurt this afternoon)

Must be pretty chilly in the basement today, went to wash a load of clothes in Missy Maytag, and it took her a minute or two to get up to speed. She kept saying Brrr tooooo coldddddd.

Only made it up to 20F today with the sun out. Is now 18F and has become very windy, making it bitterly cold. Tomorrow about 20F again with some snow. House I'm living in (electric baseboard heat) never got above 69F today. I can't turn on some of the units as I have things stacked in front of them. I'll be so glad to get out of here.

old but toasty warm...

...it was 74 today which helped ease the pain of turning 60 on Saturday...I'd take 40 years old and 10 below zero any day

my new little dog Maggie at 4 1/2 months...my little Springer Molly died suddenly 6 weeks ago, she was only 8, I tried everything to save her

Minnesota Winters

Hey Baba Reba!

Trust the Scandinavians, Polish, Germans and other Northern Europeans to leave their countries, cross an ocean, then half a continent to settle in a place that gets as damn cold in winter as "the old country"! *LOL*

When young and watching the "Mary Tyler Moore Show" never got all the Swedish and such references. However by the time of Rose Nylund on "Golden Girls", finally got the picture. Rose did the right thing IMHO, move and retire to Florida!

Twas 3 above when I awoke, now it is a balmy 10 degrees here in old "Mizzerie". Still no snow to speak of, but we are predicted a good one. I'll believe it when I see it. Ya'll will here me whoop all the way in NYC!

It got down to 26 here in Houston this morning. It is supposed to be in the upper teens friday night here. Gotta go pick up a few more pipe spigot covers.
But I have been in way below zero temps a few times so far this year. And then you have to do aircraft deicing, which takes time depending on how busy the deicers are.
If you think it's cold, how would you like to have to deice aircraft in this weather? Not only is it cold and wet, you have the wind blowing the deicer fluid back on you. I think these guys should get hazard pay for this job. Do you think the guy in the photo below is cold?

What a Relief!

This being Iowa, I've been sort of dreading my first real utility bill from Mid-American, our local energy provider. They supply both natural gas and electric and combine the bill. Well, today, it came.

$119.32. For gas and electric. In Iowa. In winter. With a foot and a half of snow on the ground. With daily highs in the single digits, and lows below zero.

WOO HOO!

There was a reason I wanted a small house!
