I don't know if this is the correct forum for this, but PBS has aired a wonderful documentary on Leo Bakeland, the Belgian scientist/entrepreneur who emigrated to America to pursue his passion for applied science and created Bakelite, the original plastic and , according to the film, the world's first synthetic. Check it out when it comes around as it will many times.
