Oh, now I'm going to be an a______

Austin, lots of trucking companies are hiring drivers, now is your chance to drive the big rigs. Another job is to be a city bus driver, you get to drive a huge vehicle and yet will help save the environment by providing public transportation. It is a stressful, aggravating job though. I would not want to drive the shuttle bus like at our hospital. It has a "Power Stroke!!" diesel that is sooo loud, worse than the Port Authority buses with their Detroit Diesel engines (that's what you learn when you have a conversation with the bus driver)

Spats, don't you find it strange that when the landslide happened, no one in an SUV dared to try to go over it to get to the job they love so much on time? I thought surely someone was going to try that.

Lighten up --its not the type of CAR thats the problem--but the PERSON driving it.I own A Toyota Highlander Hybrid and LOVE it!-and oh yes it has a backseat DVD player. In the meantime watch out for those "Soccer Moms" in their Minivans and Suburbens with the "Baby on Board" stickers.Seen several of those FLIPPED in the roads. When I was in the Wash DC area the "Soccer Moms" were WORSE than the other drivers! They were VERY aggressive.

What's worse than an SUV driver? A driver of a CAR that has an SUV load in it!!! I tend not to favor SUV's because most people drive them only to haul themselves around. There is the rare occasion I guess when someone needs to haul something, and instead of borrowing or renting an SUV or truck, they attempt to do it in their car. On Interstate 95, usually during the summertime, one can find the little compact station wagon, like a Passatt, Escort, or another vehicle of similar size (frequently the Dodge Caravan minivan) loaded with way too many passengers, and way too much cargo. The rear bumper is dragging on the ground, the tires look flat, and the idiot driver is dragging this wreck down the left lane attempting to sustain the minimum speed and not having much luck. Frequently, a vehicle such as this is seen swearving around because it's handling so poorly that the driver can't keep it pointing straight ahead.

Yes, there are a few occasions when an SUV is the better tool for the job! One way to fight bad drivers tho..Use the CB radio! Radio to a truck driver that there's a "4-wheeler" out there causing trouble...the semi-drivers will take care of that driver! One of the most hilarious I saw was when a few truck drivers trapped the driver of a speeding Expedition. Boxed him in between several semis. THey were talking back and forth, and a few truck drivers up ahead spotted a cop running radar. When they approached the speed trap, the trucks broke their formation, and let the Expedition run free...and let the impatient idiot blow through the speed trap at some ungodly insane speed....instant blue-lite special! (this tactic also keeps the police from bugging them if they are tied up with a car!)

I'm with the rest of you guys here tho on the on-board video screens! Why the heck to we put kids in front the TV so much! They become commercialized zombies totally entranced by whatever political or commercial message that hollywood is sending out. No wonder kids these days have self-esteem problems!

That's a great lookin Impala there GokartWasher. Looks very similar to the one my grandmother had. Hers had a 400 V8 and was particularly fast! YOu don't see too many GM cars from that era still around!

Cybrvanr, maybe that car's owner has pooled resources with other family members, because of the higher price of gas. Or perhaps they'd rather spend their money on other priorities that may be more important to their family.

Or they might even not have the wherewithal to have the latest SUV, or any SUV at all. They might just have enough in their budget to afford only that Escort, or not be able to afford the escalating insurance rates on an SUV.

They might not be willing to sacrifice the future and drown in debt just to keep up with the Joneses.

Fiscal responsibility is not idiocy, nor is poverty a crime.

Austin, im just old enough now that i can remember "when i was your age". Be Careful! too much confidence behind the wheel is a bad thing. i have a theory that most young people really dont become good drivers till their latter 20s. maybe im full of it. anyway, when on the road, always assume the other driver is gonna f*ck up.

Jason...

If you're driving in the left lane 20 or more mph's under the speed limit, I'm gonna crush your ass like a....well....bug. OK, I'm ducking and running! Mark

I was talking about cars & trucks with a guy I work with. He said that he was getting his wife a Ford F-350 pickup with the largest diesel engine available in it. I asked him why on earth would she need such a big vehicle? His response? So when she's out there tailgating others, she'll get more respect. Dumbass!

We own a 2004 Mazda Tribute SUV(mine)and a 2003 BMW 325. The Mazda can carry just about anything we care to put in it, and it gets around 22-23 mpg in all around driving. The BMW gets around 18-20 mpg, but it's the family car. I previously owned a 98 Ford Explorer, and to tell you the truth it handled like a 10 foot ladder on roller skates going down a freeway. Terrible.
The Mazda handles more lke a car, very little to no body roll in the curves. It's a nice ride.

I get to see my share of women and teens driving these huge SUV's going 80mph too. I even saw one gal eating a hamburger and talking on a cell phone at the same time! I also have seen a businessman set up his lap top on the hub of his steering wheel and was using it while driving. I have also seen others reading paperback books while driving. It's a mess out there.
When I was growing up, if you went more than 5 mph over the speed limit, or forgot to signal a turn, you'd have a cop on your ass. Nowadays it's rare to see any kind of traffic enforcement on the roads.

Not always fuel efficient................

Down here we frequently have ALot of water in the streets, even after an afternoon thunderstorm. After working all day im pretty thankful to be able to get to my house, and not wait for the street to drain. One does not need a Monster truck here, but sometimes it gets deep enough on the truck to make me cringe.

Allen,

I have a 1998 Limited Explorer, it does have some body roll, but nothing like you describe... I did upgrade the suspension on my with stiffer shocks and such, the day after i bought it (it needed it)..Our 2000 rolls like a roller skate though...

Here's ya an Excursion

OK, in my running around today, i took some pictures to post.
Here's one of the most mentioned trucks here Fords Excursion:

At the Chevy Dealer they have 5 rows of SUV's.. Our ford place has 12 Suv's on the whole lot, with the exception of the escape, they have about 100 of them.. 12 suv's..

Talk About Overloaded!

I spotted this Civic with 5 young men in it, it was very low to the ground and barley whent up the hill..

Now... A true Stupid Usless Vehicle...

I also whent by the Land Rover Dealer to ride around...
Can you all guess how much this bad boy is selling for?

Nifty little car Louis. Is that gas or electric?

Scott, there's many ways to get the proper vehicle to do a job without buying it. I rented a Ford Explorer for $225 a week with unlimited mileage when I had to haul a bunch of people and tools for work. For these people going on vacation, they could borrow a friend's vehicle, or even better, if there's that many people in the car, chances are one of the passengers owns a car too. Splitting the load and passengers up among two vehicles would be MUCH safer...and comfortable! Even if they find the need quite often to need a large hauler, there's no shortage of them on the used market. I bought my Astro-van used 12 years ago for $4000, and has cost me minimal to maintain.

While poverty is not a crime, driving an overloaded vehicle is!!!The reason is because it's not safe. If these families are saving to send their kids to college, they ought to think about the danger they are putting their kids into, and the fact they may not make it to college driving their vehicle like that! If the situation is so dire that these people must overload their vehicle, they should at least drive on non-interstate highways where there is less traffic and lower speeds. Here in Central VA, we're no stranger to catastrophoic crashes on I95 that wipe out entire families!

...well, back to electric cars. Anybody ever heard of electric car drag racing? There's one up in Columbia Maryland (I Think) every year. I went with a friend up there and they had "Top fuel" looking cars that would do 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Best of all, you can enjoy the excitement without all the stinky fumes and having to wear earplugs! I think it would be fun to build an electric car sometime.

...back to the SUV's Do you get snow where you live? Typically, the balance of vehicles on the roads stays about 2/3 regular 2WD vehicles to 4WD SUV.'s. BUT notice the amount of SUV's that somehow get stuck or end up in crashes in relation to the others! While 4WD does give one extra capability, many drivers seem to think that it will make the vehicle handle as if it's a dry or paved road.

Good point.

Let's face it, folks just don't have common sense when they get into their cars anymore (even I succumb to distractions far too often)....

And, yeah, 4WD is a huge help (I wouldn't have survived Quebec without it)....

This may sound crazy, but I actually LIKED getting out and flipping the hubs on my old Scout....it made me more aware that it was a whole other vehicle, in terms of handling, once 4WD was engaged...

I've not seen many people actually giving any real reason why they NEED a hulking great SUV for daily driving. I'm not just talking here, I'm talking anywhere. I've never driven one, but I have no need to and don't want to. I'm quite happy with smaller cars, thank you very much :-)

Mark,

I hope you were kidding. FYI I drive the speed limit or 5 miles over. Even faster if I need to pass, and I stay right. So you could blow right by if that makes you feel good. I hope you don't really take that attitude to the road.

Washertalk. I bought the Bug because it's very fuel efficent, and it's not bad on the environment considering it's a diesel. It burns very little at a time, so it's very clean.

You think there's theatrics in Texas, come to Lousiana and watch even more drama.

Jason, have you had any problems with it?

People seem to either get flawless ones, or ones with problems galore...

I'm tall, and I like them for comfort.

Jason,

This is off topic but I have a VW TDI also . . . if you don't know about tdiclub.com then you should. Mine is great on mileage, which I love, but honestly the worst car I've ever owned in terms of reliability of major components. Without the help from the club I doubt if I would still own it . . . truly a lifesaver.

Your theatrics comment reminded me of one memory of driving in Louisiana. It was 1980, and a good friend had just bought a new Renault R5 from his old dealer in Georgia, although he lived in Texas. We drove his Alfa trade-in to Georgia, picked up the little silver R5, complete with red "LeCar" decals, and proceeded back to Texas. By Lousiana we really wanted to cover some ground and I had the Renault sitting on 80 when we passed a new Trans Am somewhere on I-10, complete with the "screaming chicken" decal on the hood. In a moment the Pontiac came blasting by and pulled in front of us. That was fine with me, except soon he slowed down to 70 and I repassed him. This happened three times before the guy finally got off the interstate. He A) did't want to go 80, and B) couldn't stand anyone else going faster than he was. We all laughed too hard about that!

More on topic, I don't care for SUVs too much either. Not all SUV drivers are inconsiderate, but I'm REALLY tired of those who park full-sized SUVs in clearly labeled compact spaces. The worst I ever had happen was a few years ago when I parked my Fiat X1/9 in the City of Beverly Hills parking garage to take care of some business at Planning. When I came back there was a Lincoln Navigator on the left, and a Range Rover on the right, both in compact spaces. I couldn't get in either door of the Fiat as both SUVs were over the white lines.

All I can guess is that the Range Rover driver was a very tiny, skinny woman who squeezed out the door. After waiting awhile, I finally was able to open the passenger door of the Fiat, hold onto the roof, and reach my arm in to turn on the ignition and hit the passenger's window button. That allowed me to lean on the window sill and snake my legs into the Fiat, tail first. Now I just go up to the top floor of the garage and figure on walking down a lot of stairs, as the lower level is usually full of big SUVs with drivers too lazy to go to the full-sized spaces on the upper levels.

Big SUVs can be a menace to pedestrians, too. In Santa Monica the cops sometimes run sting operations where a disguised cop will start to cross an uncontrolled crosswalk on Santa Monica Blvd. or Wilshire. People who don't stop instantly will then be ticketed by a waiting motorcycle cop. That's fine if you're in the No. 1 lane, but try being in the No. 2 or 3 lane with an Escalade in the No. 1 lane! You'll NEVER see the pedestrian, as he or she is not as tall as the SUV . . . and they'll still ticket all of you. I haven't been caught myself, but now if I have an SUV to my left and I sense it slow down I hit the brakes asap just in case. Thankfully I don't drive a lot in Santa Monica.

I hate all of them

All I can think of is the big "Wagon Queen Family Truck-sters" (National Lampoon's Family Vacation) Before us kids talked my Dad into a Mercedes-Benz, we had 3 station wagons, and yes, you could pile everything in, but they were ugly. SUV's and Mini Vans fall into the same category. What really perplexes me is people who buy them thinking it's the "cool" thing to do...to see a woman all dressed up CLIMBING in and out of one is such a ridiculous sight....not to mention loading up one with every ammenity known to man-kind. Buy a big American or German sedan and look stylish while being able to cart around all of the people and stuff you can imagine....just my gripe. :)

Flawless Bug here

I have a good one, I have almost 49,000 miles and very little trouble. But let's see what happens when the warranty goes out (Which happens in about 1,000 miles).

I'm so glad I don't have a long-ass commute any more. Used to be 60 miles/day, though some of the worst gridlock in the nation (1 hr to go 30 miles, more like 2 hrs on a Friday). Now I have a 2 mile five minute commute from one side of downtown to the other side... no freeways/bridges/interchanges in the route. Just a few stop signs and traffic lights, and of course I plot my course to shave a minute or two off the journey each morning anyway ;-)

My commute car is a Dodge Neon coupe; when I was doing the gridlock dance, I had some SUV's cut me off - usually a middle-aged woman at the wheel, with a sneer on her puss. By the way, recent studies showed that woman drivers will not brake as hard for male pedestrians as they will for female pedestrians... LOL...

Anyway, back on topic... I've found with the Neon that defensive driving means taking some assertive action. I can usually spot an SUV trying to come up and do a hairy pass from the right... so if I'm in the fast lane, I'll try to speed up to prevent them from doing that. Even though it's just a 3 speed automatic, the Neon is light enoug that the 2 liter four will enable it to accelerate briskly once the tranny kicks down to second gear. Sometimes though there's nothing you can do, but just slow down and let them pass or do whatever they think they need to do to get to their destination 2 seconds ahead of you.

I happen to have a full size long bed Dodge pickup, as well. I don't take any crap from SUV's when I'm in that monster, LOL.

Pet peeve around here: People in slow moving vehicles (usually sedans or minivans) who think that since they have two or more people, they should be in the carpool lane, even though the carpool hours are not active and they are going much slower than the other lanes of traffic. I just shake my head at their naivitee/stupidity/rudeness and pass on the right - carefully - at the earliest opportunity.

Last but not least, Jason, you could fight fire with fire. Buy an older full size pickup. The more beat-up, the better. Then go out on the highway during commute hours and DARE the SUV drivers to act like the aholes they seem to be.

Nifty little car Louis. Is that gas or electric?

Neither. It's powered by small rodents in cages. Louis goes on semi-annual field trips to Norway where he collects lemmings before they commit mass suicide - not only pleasing PETA but also respecting the environment.

OK, that was a joke.

Heheheh.

It's a Smart car, the "Fortwo" or something like that. The motors are below the floor pan. Some are diesel, very popular in Europe, but Mercedes has lost $billions on the Smart cars, never made a profit so far. There are plans to bring Smart to the USA. For a time they were discussing bringing a four door model here, but dropped that out of cost considerations. CR said the Smart is probably downright dangerous on American freeways, but I suspect that won't keep ownders from venturing out for short hops. It could be a great commute vehicle on clogged freeways, esp if the state decides to let them go free in the car pool lanes (like motorcycles and hybrids getting more than 40 mpg).

I wouldn't mind having a Smart car for my 2 mile commute.

I couldn't drive it.. Too small..I am clasterphobic..I did sit in one back in september, while in detroit..
