Austin, lots of trucking companies are hiring drivers, now is your chance to drive the big rigs. Another job is to be a city bus driver, you get to drive a huge vehicle and yet will help save the environment by providing public transportation. It is a stressful, aggravating job though. I would not want to drive the shuttle bus like at our hospital. It has a "Power Stroke!!" diesel that is sooo loud, worse than the Port Authority buses with their Detroit Diesel engines (that's what you learn when you have a conversation with the bus driver)

Spats, don't you find it strange that when the landslide happened, no one in an SUV dared to try to go over it to get to the job they love so much on time? I thought surely someone was going to try that.

Lighten up --its not the type of CAR thats the problem--but the PERSON driving it.I own A Toyota Highlander Hybrid and LOVE it!-and oh yes it has a backseat DVD player.In the meantime watch out for those "Soccer Moms" in their Minivans and Suburbens with the "Baby on Board" stickers.Seen several of those FLIPPED in the roads.When I was in the Wash DC area the "Soccer Moms" were WORSE than the other drivers!They were VERY aggressive.

What's worse than an SUV driver? A driver of a CAR that has an SUV load in it!!! I tend not to favor SUV's because most people drive them only to haul themselves around. There is the rare occasion I guess when someone needs to haul something, and instead of borrowing or renting an SUV or truck, they attempt to do it in their car. On Interstate 95, usually during the summertime, one can find the little compact station wagon, like a Passatt, Escort, or another vehicle of similar size (frequently the Dodge Caravan minivan) loaded with way too many passengers, and way too much cargo. The rear bumper is dragging on the ground, the tires look flat, and the idiot driver is dragging this wreck down the left lane attempting to sustain the minimum speed and not having much luck. Frequently, a vehicle such as this is seen swearving around because it's handling so poorly that the driver can't keep it pointing straight ahead.

Yes, there are a few occasions when an SUV is the better tool for the job! One way to fight bad drivers tho..Use the CB radio! Radio to a truck driver that there's a "4-wheeler" out there causing trouble...the semi-drivers will take care of that driver! One of the most hilarious I saw was when a few truck drivers trapped the driver of a speeding Expedition. Boxed him in between several semis. THey were talking back and forth, and a few truck drivers up ahead spotted a cop running radar. When they approached the speed trap, the trucks broke their formation, and let the Expedition run free...and let the impatient idiot blow through the speed trap at some ungodly insane speed....instant blue-lite special! (this tactic also keeps the police from bugging them if they are tied up with a car!)

I'm with the rest of you guys here tho on the on-board video screens! Why the heck to we put kids in front the TV so much! They become commercialized zombies totally entranced by whatever political or commercial message that hollywood is sending out. No wonder kids these days have self-esteem problems!

That's a great lookin Impala there GokartWasher. Looks very similar to the one my grandmother had. Hers had a 400 V8 and was particularly fast! YOu don't see too many GM cars from that era still around!

Cybrvanr, maybe that car's owner has pooled resources with other family members, because of the higher price of gas. Or perhaps they'd rather spend their money on other priorities that may be more important to their family.

Or they might even not have the wherewithal to have the latest SUV, or any SUV at all. They might just have enough in their budget to afford only that Escort, or not be able to afford the escalating insurance rates on an SUV.

They might not be willing to sacrifice the future and drown in debt just to keep up with the Joneses.

Fiscal responsibility is not idiocy, nor is poverty a crime.

Austin, im just old enough now that i can remember "when i was your age". Be Careful! too much confidence behind the wheel is a bad thing. i have a theory that most young people really dont become good drivers till their latter 20s. maybe im full of it. anyway, when on the road, always assume the other driver is gonna f*ck up.

I was talking about cars & trucks with a guy I work with. He said that he was getting his wife a Ford F-350 pickup with the largest diesel engine available in it. I asked him why on earth would she need such a big vehicle? His response? So when she's out there tailgating others, she'll get more respect. Dumbass!

We own a 2004 Mazda Tribute SUV(mine)and a 2003 BMW 325. The Mazda can carry just about anything we care to put in it, and it gets around 22-23 mpg in all around driving. The BMW gets around 18-20 mpg, but it's the family car. I previously owned a 98 Ford Explorer, and to tell you the truth it handled like a 10 foot ladder on roller skates going down a freeway. Terrible.
The Mazda handles more lke a car, very little to no body roll in the curves. It's a nice ride.

I get to see my share of women and teens driving these huge SUV's going 80mph too. I even saw one gal eating a hamburger and talking on a cell phone at the same time! I also have seen a businessman set up his lap top on the hub of his steering wheel and was using it while driving. I have also seen others reading paperback books while driving. It's a mess out there.
When I was growing up, if you went more than 5 mph over the speed limit, or forgot to signal a turn, you'd have a cop on your ass. Nowadays it's rare to see any kind of traffic enforcement on the roads.

Not always fuel efficient................

Down here we frequently have ALot of water in the streets, even after an afternoon thunderstorm. After working all day im pretty thankful to be able to get to my house, and not wait for the street to drain. One does not need a Monster truck here, but sometimes it gets deep enough on the truck to make me cringe.

I have a 1998 Limited Explorer, it does have some body roll, but nothing like you describe... I did upgrade the suspension on my with stiffer shocks and such, the day after i bought it (it needed it)..Our 2000 rolls like a roller skate though...

At the Chevy Dealer they have 5 rows of SUV's.. Our ford place has 12 Suv's on the whole lot, with the exception of the escape, they have about 100 of them.. 12 suv's..

Scott, there's many ways to get the proper vehicle to do a job without buying it. I rented a Ford Explorer for $225 a week with unlimited mileage when I had to haul a bunch of people and tools for work. For these people going on vacation, they could borrow a friend's vehicle, or even better, if there's that many people in the car, chances are one of the passengers owns a car too. Splitting the load and passengers up among two vehicles would be MUCH safer...and comfortable! Even if they find the need quite often to need a large hauler, there's no shortage of them on the used market. I bought my Astro-van used 12 years ago for $4000, and has cost me minimal to maintain.

While poverty is not a crime, driving an overloaded vehicle is!!!The reason is because it's not safe. If these families are saving to send their kids to college, they ought to think about the danger they are putting their kids into, and the fact they may not make it to college driving their vehicle like that! If the situation is so dire that these people must overload their vehicle, they should at least drive on non-interstate highways where there is less traffic and lower speeds. Here in Central VA, we're no stranger to catastrophoic crashes on I95 that wipe out entire families!

...well, back to electric cars. Anybody ever heard of electric car drag racing? There's one up in Columbia Maryland (I Think) every year. I went with a friend up there and they had "Top fuel" looking cars that would do 9 seconds in the 1/4 mile. Best of all, you can enjoy the excitement without all the stinky fumes and having to wear earplugs! I think it would be fun to build an electric car sometime.

...back to the SUV's Do you get snow where you live? Typically, the balance of vehicles on the roads stays about 2/3 regular 2WD vehicles to 4WD SUV.'s. BUT notice the amount of SUV's that somehow get stuck or end up in crashes in relation to the others! While 4WD does give one extra capability, many drivers seem to think that it will make the vehicle handle as if it's a dry or paved road.
