Bandwidth Troubles in January

Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Help Support :

For example, thread 9664 Faces of Members was good, but because it is so large with text and pictures, maybe it could be moved to member section. Actually, I would love to see the pictures put in where the profiles are. I am sure this thread was a major bandwith hog, however enjoyable. We don't want cybercommunism, but there are sytemic limits, so maybe we limit the number of posts per thread to 50,or so, and then you get the offbalance guy? Just some suggestions to try to help. Phil

bandwidth for dummies

I was wondering if the You tube and movie links use a lot more than a simple post, with a picture? maybe eliminate them from super? I sure like them in Vintage even if it takes this dial up 1 hr for me to see them. arthur

Display images as thumbnails

When a message thread is entered, have images displayed as a clickable thumbnail. Only if the user clicks on the thumbnail will the full image be displayed. Especially with the really long threads, some people are only interested in viewing the most recent additions, and it isn't necessary for all previous images to download and display.

Well......

not all browsers are compatible with Yahoo groups.

The "digital divide" is not necessarily one between the ones with access and the ones without, but between dialup and broadband users.

Banner ads are unappealing, but they are profitable. They are also problematical, leading to pop-ups, flooding, and other unpleasantnesses. (I have seen these on another site, one on which I am a "top 20" contributor).

A fee...unless it would be nominal; I would not be able to donate, and might probably have to withdraw.

Another site I read regularly has size limits on
embedded photographs, and limits photos to 4 a day, and strictly so.

I do know that if we approach this calmly, rationally, and with love and thought, a reasonable solution can be found.

Again, thanks, thanks, and more thanks to dear Robert!

I may not have this right, but bandwidth is all viewing traffic that looks at a web page, right?

One thing I've noticed is that you do not have to be a member to read the forums. You only have to join and sign in to post. If you set this site up where we have to sign in to view the forums, you will eliminate non-members who casually log onto the site, thus saving some bandwidth. These individuals will then have to sign up in order to view the forums.

Having said that, most of the bandwidth is probably being used by we the members. I agree with the suggestions already mentioned, and I will from now on post only appliance and accessory related posts. I will also double check and, as necessary, use my picture software to reduce the size of any images that I post to under 100Kb.

viewing traffic ???

Good Grief, I can cut that down a lot ! being the A.D.D. person I am, I click quite a bit! If that is the case I can certainly cut down on my viewing. <p> You know, Today I have probably posted more than I did in the whole month of December, January is off to a great start Robert!

Finally get a computer again,

And this is the first thread I have read, wow, guess this has grown in the 7 months I have not had a computer. Would taking some of the discussions to the chat section help or is that still thru the same channels? I too would support a members only website that we pay into, not that the $$ would fix the problem, but it would stop some or all of the access and should solve the problem, and the money collected could go to help out needy people, etc. Just a thought.

oh Scott...

Welcome back!! I was wondering about you the other day, when I found some emails regarding that Maytag Wringer....

Did she ever go to a good home???

I am still sad I did not get her :-(

It's the embedded/uploaded pictures that sap up bandwith. Changing the board code so pics are clickable links instead of displayed images would help a LOT, particularly on those long threads like member pics and holiday decorations that get repeated additions and repeated viewings. The links could be clicked to see the newest material, and not have everything loading/displaying on every viewing. That would also greatly speed up response time for people on dial-up.

By the way, for reasons I won't go into right now, I've been paying the media server since December.

And by the way again, I don't know how much bandwith the parent site pulls or is allowed per month, but the media server material averages more than 1 GB PER DAY. August 2006 was 77 GB for the month, must have been something popular posted. September was 61 GB. December was 35 GB. Media Server Bandwith

And by the way yet again, there *is* a way now to make uploaded pictures clickable links (as I did in this post), but it's tricky. :-)

Yea i agree.. I am trying to not keeping coming here, but lure of the site... Oh the lure...
Tggls- U R 2 Fnny

Ok.. I will snorkle around and then i will check back after the 11 o clock news

BTW_ I do wish we had to login every day (or every time we come to the site) insted of every seven days.. This would keep me from posting so much... Would that help???

I may not have this right, but bandwidth is all viewing traffic that looks at a web page, right?

Yes that is correct and with our account we get 1000gb. Last month we used 937gb.

Although the clickable links could work at some point, to be honest I don't have the time nor the desire to any major rewrites to the code right now. As for a private membership site, forget it, I think that is a terrible idea for any club website.

So far this month we have used 30gb our of our 1000gb, if we keep up at this rate we will use 930gb, which is close but still ok. As I said before, once we go over 1000gb, there will be no more aw.org for the rest of the month.

~We had nekkid posting night.
I miss all the fun.

Anyhoo. I will try not to view and post during normal business hours. This will REALLY cut traffic AND help my career. LOL

And I offer my IM / E-mail addresses so that conversations that SHOULD occur off-cite, will occur off-site.

Somebody said something earlier about posting on Vaccumland.com.

Well, come on over people! Robert designed the site and we have lots of bandwidth as far as I know.

And, the truth be known, many of you like vacuums in addition to washer/dryers/dishwashers/ironers/irons/blenders/mixers/waffle irons/toasters/outboard motors/canoes/and whatever the hell you are into.

So make it easy and enjoy another of Mr. Seger's fabulous sites and post with us on vacuumland.com

See you at the rodeo!

Big Brother is watching YOU!

Ah but Helen dear, are they ready for me?

Austin: TYVM. Save your own hide. Run from me RUN! I'm bad news. LOL Never admit a "secret alliance" with Toggle. They will vote you out of the house and me off these islands.

Can you picture me misbehaving over there? I may end up with a power-nozzle belt as a gag, and an aluminum wand up .... Hmmm ooooooohhhh let me get over there now, right quick. VITE VITE! ... LOL

Ok.. All this computer lingo has me baffled... I am going back to a day job next week (H&R Block, Asst. Manager 5 years) so i know i will only be able to check out the goings on two or three times a day..Plus i soon too will be a subistute teacher...

But in the interim, i will try not to yack me brain off..

How can you blame the Toggs?? You bring us soo many wonderful thinggies.. I can't wait to meet you in Tucson! I am the one who posts wayyy to much, i admit, i did go a tad overboard!

One simple factor that may be playing here is the fact that in December, many people have time off, or their workload is less, so they are out there surfing the net, and hitting A.W. more frequently. As January, and other months approach, the demands on the system will probably go back down a bit as people go back to work, and don't have as much time to spend here!

iirc didn't we have this looming problem quite a few months ago and everyone promised including myself to cut back on the pictures or at least make an effort to reduce their sizes but that seems to have fizzled. I know I know I'm just as guilty but I try and keep my piccys small, some of the pix posted here are humongous. They won't even open on my dialup account.

Robert

i hope you will be as candid as possible about what is needed to make things smoother. anyone who holds this site dear will naturally respect your wishes. i feel badly about the thought of this lovely gift of yours turning into a burden.

im sure most have noticed that this site has hit the top of Googles search results for washer stuff. suspect many "hits" are due to Google search results. is this useful as an angle to better things?

Well, clearly Robert's post wasn't either understood or taken seriously, as evidenced by the creation of more nonsensical threads of little or no value to the topic/subject of this website since this thread was begun today.

In an effort to make the point, perhaps when the bandwidth gets close to the maximum, these ridiculous space-wasting threads just need to just disappear and if this doesn't work, Robert could just assign a limit of bandwidth to the Super forum and shut it down every month when that limit has been reached. Extreme measures for sure, I'm not pointing fingers at anyone - we are all guilty of these - but if we don't police ourselves and learn to abide by the guidelines trying to be communicated in this thread, then we'll all pay the price.

Delete away, Robert, it may be the only way...
