Basement Finishing Progress - September 2010

Well it's been almost a year since I started my "spare time" basement finishing project. It has been quite a bit of work, but with the worst behind me now (drywall finishing), I'm on the home stretch! I spent all of labor day weekend on the final finish of drywall and texturing with a Wagner PowerTex (slick tool, but what a mess). I took a 3 day weekend this week as well to try and finish up the painting.

The attatched photos on this new thread are after all the drywall finishing, texturing, and primer coats are on. I'm finishing up the last of the color wall coats tomorrow, and then will start on the floor tile.

Items left to complete:

Install 2 celing light fixtures

Install wall to wall storage shelving, and shelf inside lighted detergent cubbie

Install floor tile, grout, prime, paint, install and caulk joints of baseboard trim and corner round.

Install custom pedestal, Miele Washer and Dryer. Washer is temporarily up in the kitchen hooked to sink, and dryer is still crated burried in the family room. Still using my LG dryer and moving it around as needed while basement is being finished. I can't use the dryer anywhere else as this is the only 240 volt outlet in the house

Purchase and install water softener under stairwell cove.

Purchase commercial grade utility table for folding clothing on.

Purchase and have carpet / pad installed on stairs leading to basement.

Trim out inside of door to basement.

-Sit back, relax, get drunk, and watch a few loads of wash in the Mieles

-Get royally chewed out by boyfriend for blowing the original project quote of $900. Slight overage, including the Mieles, of only $6,050 and some change.

-Remain calm when shopping privledges for all of 2011 are revoked.

Detergent Cubbie

This could be a price is right showcase box or something... it's just a lighted detergent cubbie, everyone has those!!! ;-)

I'll have a shelf in the back to store less frequently used items. The light in the top is a 50 watt halogen recessed light, same as on the back wall of the basement.

Wow, all the angles in the first photo make the room look like it's a minimalist sculpture. Cool! The lighted detergent cubbie is a truly unique feature. You could put it in the listing if you ever decided to sell the house: "Deluxe, artfully-designed laundry area, complete with lighted detergent showcase." If you put in a little two-tiered rack or shelf, you could display your detergents and additives on multiple levels. What kind of texturing is on the walls? Is that what's called "orange peel"?

Looks beautiful! Hope you get to the "sit back and watch the Miele's" part very soon.

And I must say you really pulled a 'fishes and loaves' trick getting all that done for
$900---wink, wink!

Hi Eugene,

Thanks for the note. I loved the fishes & loaves note too haha! The pictures I took were from my cell phone which arent the greatest. Here is a better photo I took of the texture before I started priming.

Celing / Lighting Done

Another late night, 12:30am. Finished the 2 coats on the celing and under the cove areas, and installed the lights and smoke detector. Now I can start on the wall color this week, then onto tile...

Yes, it looks excellent. Just remind the other half you'll get it all back and more at resale time (ok, maybe not the Mieles, which you will likely take with you), plus you get to enjoy it in the meantime!

One more coat...

Finished the 2 coats of cutting in the color, and got through the 1st coat last night. Here is a preview

Note I still have 1 more coat of color to go, there are spots where it's clearly needed.

I'll have the Miele's down here before I know it! Tile floor is next...

Paint Lines

Had to preview my paint lines with a new technique I learned about. Basically after I taped the celing off, I went around and painted the edge of the tape with the same white paint I used on the celing. This seals the tape edge so the wall color can't sneak up behind it and get on the celing.

Razor sharp!
